Speedo cable length (drum brake triple)

I have a 94 cm (RGS) speedo cable on my drum brake triple which was awkwardly routed all the way left and back because it was too long. So I figured the next shorter size should fit and ordered an 80cm version - which of course is too short by a couple of cm. What was the original length? And where do I get one in ca. 85cm?

Just take the spring pre-load spacers out of your forks. That should give you enough suspension sag for the 80cm cable to reach. ;)

You can actually shorten speedo cables. It's a bit of a fiddle to get one of the ends off the outer sheath and then re-crimp it onto the shortened end. You also need a special forming tool to re-make the square end on the shortened inner cable. But it's certainly do-able. Is there a cable specialist in your area that could do it for you?

Chris, I can measure the cable on my bike but I’m away till the weekend so PM me as a reminder then if you’re still looking for the info. From memory I think the cable length was 86cm but my memory is not reliable. It must be the same cable as fitted to the Ceriani forked triples. I bought mine from Wolfgang. This cable was too long to route in a simple C-loop, under braking it would sometimes hook behind the right side horn. I routed the cable in a S-loop, going over the front of the lower yoke (same for brake cable). If you look at some of the period photos of the Drummers you can see the factory occasionally did the same.

send your too long cable to JJ cables here in the UK, tell them your rqiurements, they may shorten the one you have or make a totally new one (or three) but they will for sure do it for you one way or another, let the worlds drummer owners know that you are doing this (wish I had one!)

sorry havent got the phone number to hand,I never ring them anyway, I just send off old cables or drawings and wait the call to pay the cost

Hi Chris I measured mine in situ (on my drummer) and its close to 84 cm, the cable leaves the speedo then is routed over the front of the lower triple clamp then sweeps gently to the speedo drive, and will not catch on anything.

Chris,
I recall a place in Aschaffenburg that used to do one off cables, name escapes me.
'Tachowellen Hersteller Deutschland' in Google should provide some results.
If that doesn't help ask parts buff Ernesto;)

Yes, that's what I figured it should be. Unfortunately the original one went the way of my seat, my calipers, my Laverda bolts etc.
