speedo drive washer jota

Hi all . i appear to missing a washer that fits between speedo drive and fork leg . i have found the dia which clearance fits the spindle @20mm but unsure of the thickness ,does anyone know the thickness or have a spare ,1981 series 2 tia,

Do you have a recess in the speedo drive housing? If not, you do not require a washer. The "washer" is actually a thin steel spacer that prevents the alloy drive housing being crushed when the axle is tightened and is normally pressed into the side of the speedo housing. It is ABSOLUTELY NORMAL to end up with a gap between fork leg and speedo drive housing!!! This cannot be stressed enough!

The entire wheel assembly is installed tight to the LH fork leg, the RH leg should be free to find its "sweet spot" and is then clamped to the axle.

Have you been looking at a parts list?


#16 fits inside #3 to stop the alloy from being crushed.
I didn't realise they were two parts until relatively recently.
Check the centre of your speedo gear cover with a magnet.
If it sticks, the washer is in there.

Thanks i will check it out next wk end, unless i get a spare hour or two in the week , there is no visible washer and the speedo housing apears to catch the leg where the leg starts to increase in size ie 50-60 mm up the leg from the spindle, so its not possible to push the drive flush to the leg but will take the wheel out , I checked on andy wagners site .

Thanks no recess in the housing i will remove the wheel and check . i need to do small paint re work so it needs to come out ,

Hello Brooky,

I to have '81 series2 Jota and like you I noticed a washer missing in that same spot and put one in. [It was early days of ownership]
A few years later after a brake pad change I couldn't get the pads to seat /clear [what ever] the disc.
I removed the washer and everthing fell into place. As Piet pointed out to you, and for me at least there was never one there.

I have found over several years of ownership not all '81's came off the floor exactly the same, with many subtle differences.
I am not a rivet counter and have set my bike up for me, all the original parts are stored and will go to the next owner.
I have learnt to not respond to the "experts" who have never owned a Laverda.
