Speedo gear on wheel

On a racer you don't want parts that have no function.

Hair?
Brains?

If your good enough on the track that a couple of kg off the bike makes a difference, you don't want to be riding a Laverda Triple.

the factory gear puller (see below) is all well and good but it cannot be used on wire wheels, only on cast type.
ask Hamish. I have never had any difficulty in removing them using heat from an oxy acet torch and no puller, just heat and give the wheel a knock on two blocks of wood and gravity becomes you best friend.

Entirely agree with Marnix, if its a racer, then no gear, no gearbox, no cable and no instrument, and no anything else that does not have a function while riding, replace with a suitably made spacer, and not alloy (too flimsy even if nice and light)

Yep, should be on a twin 😺
That gear has sat unused on the front wheel of my race bike forever, for when it eventually goes out to pasture on public roads and gets a speedo. It hasn't even rusted. I reckon it weighs less than the metal I drilled out of one of the caliper bolts, worth the excess weight for the cost of replacing it.
All the wheel spacers on my road and race bikes are alloy, but not between the wheel bearings, never been a problem for decades.

At last, reason.
A racer speaking.

Far out you lot. It was a simple question  :laugh

There was no weight saving requirement just wondered if it could come off easily so I could use the spacer I have.

Consensus is keep it on so I?ll dig out the speedo drive and refit if I use that wheel.

The bike is no longer racing because I can?t bear to treat it like that but it was a great bike on the track even though in P5 UL it?s no match for the 130hp machines with slicks. (And I?ve been racing with forks that are substandard)
