Standard information

Hi all,

I was just about to order some new chains for my Sprint, and I thought I'd just check on the relevant sizes and recommended type. First, look in the workshop manual... No detail on cam or primary and info for the drive chain is only for a 630... Second, search on here... 40 minutes later, still no more idea, though I know the links for a cam chain for the 500 and Zanė bikes! I did find that a 530 rear should have 108 links and 19/40 sprocket sizes...

Now I understand why people keep asking for this information! I'm sure it's here somewhere but I'm buggered if I can find it!

Would it be a good idea for there to be a single topic for this "standard" information pinned to the top of the Technical board?

(And in the meantime, please could someone confirm the specs of the chains for my bike please?)

Hi Dick,

530 chain and sprockets on my RGS, as follows:

chain - 108 x 530; sprockets (standard gearing) - front 19 and rear 40.

HTH,
Alan :)

Why not buy quality IWIS from Andy?
No need to know the length, as he does.

I thnk he has it all now. I bought primary, cam and drive chains for my triples from him, no issues.

Alan,

Thanks for that...

You can see from my post that this was the one piece of info I did glean...

What about the cam chain and primary chains?

OK OK, that'll teach me to read more carefully next time.... ;) ;)

Details extracted from my parts info:
Primary chain, simplex, ref C121HCSR x76 rivetted endless
Cam chain simplex, ref C121HCSR x 102 incl. conn. link (2 No,)

Were you able to get a steel 38T sprocket for the Suzuki wheel, or did you go with aluminium? I wanted to get a Supersprox riveted sprocket with a light  aluminium centre but with steel teeth (and a lifetime guarantee against wearing out!). But they said they couldn't make one smaller than 42 teeth. And now I'm having trouble even finding a 40 tooth Suzuki sprocket in steel. Lots of aluminium ones but I ride mine every day.

Ken,

The 38T #520 alloy rear sprocket I fitted in 1999 when I converted to the gixxer wheels is still on the bike with little sign of wear!  Lots of road use with the occasional track day thrown in....  Second chain fitted since then is now on its' way out, will be replaced at seasons' end.  '520s just don't wear as well as #630s! :D

Specific chain information is seldom stated in factory manuals, it was expected of the owner to trundle down to his local dealer to buy an OEM part!

I got a 530 aluminium blank and machined it to fit. Thinking of going down to a 520 though.
Not out regularly 3k to 6k a year so sprocket should last a long time.

You got me thinking, when this one wears out I may look at machining the teeth off and machining a steel sprocket to fit on the outside, or am I just looking for work. Maybe just stick to a new 520 next year if this one wears out.

Dunno what you searched on Dick, but 'cam chain length' brought up the answers for me in 2 mins....  :P

Amazing thing the human mind. It never occurred to me to try chain "length" as I was fixated on number of links and size... I have absolutely no interest whatsoever in how long the chain is - I wanted to know how many links... Of course if I had thought more openly, there it was straight away as you said Rob!

Thanks.

Just about got Laverda chains sorted but being a senile old git I still get blank spots. Got all the formentioned prosucts tho.

Ken, for the rear sprocket blanks are available over here in any number of teeth numbers in steel. It might help you to know that in your part of the world using asa standards you are lucky as 5/8 chain is the only chain that has same gearing dimensions across BS and asa.

Just ask you local bearing shop for an asa 50-1 platewheel in the number of teeth you require and you might get a pleasant surprise :D :D :D

Andy

PS if you really get stuck I oculd have one in my hands today but postage would be horrendous.
