Starter 3C continue…

I started this thread in “wanted”, but I will continue it here as it makes more sense.

So, finally I have the starter working.

Thank you to Piet for his spares parts, I have to admit that is a strange feeling to open a spare item kept in his original bosch box from 50 years ago. Is a kind of privilege.

So my conclusions are. You can paint the inner part of the case, also the coil cores, and the brush plate. I just had to peel off the contact between all cases to ground the brush plate with the aluminium case and the engine. Cerakote is not affecting the magnetic fields😁. So now is all protected against rust.

I had some troubles with the brushes. The first ones I got where too short and thick, so it was really hard to weld them and twist the little wire for such tight curve. I sourced another set here:

18 is a bit too long and had to lime them to 14mm but for the rest, perfect and easy to weld.

The NOS coils from Piet were just perfect, a bit time consuming to adapt them to the case so that all fits in place.

Soldering the brushes… well, recommend you a 100W welder. All other is not enough.

It is not totally assembled but enough to make the first test (see video). And spins like crazy!! The first time took 1/2 seconds before start spinning… the longest 2 seconds of my life🤣

The test that was done on mine by the really old Auto Sparky after he rebuilt mine had him put the engine connection end against a soft pine 100x100 post and energise the starter and use it like a Router, wood grinder. I guess that proves that they might spin but not be strong enough to turn an engine over. It shocked me at the time but then made scence.

Good timing Vince. I had a 240v motor on a machine yesterday that ran okay with no load, and didn't under load. Motor was fucked, fucked.
