starter motor modification

How about using 2 fancy little batteries and wiring the starter through a solenoid to give 24v on the stating circuit. That would wake it up!
We do this on some of our old cars when they get uprated etc and their original starters can't cope.  The 24v seems not to harm the motors at all as long as they are not allowed to run free with no load, but that is unlikely with a starter motor.

I'm not an electrician or mechanic but that sounds like a good idea Julian.

I would imagine that with Direct Online Starting there is a massive volt drop from 12Volt anyway, so with 24volt to start with you might actually get the 12Volt after all.

been thinking of doing the same with a triple starter motor so am curious what the answer will be
starter motor on my 1175cc high compression triple struggles to turn the engine over and am on the 4th starter now
have been thinking of setting up a 2 second ignition delay so engine gets a chance to spin over before ignition comes in and fires
should work

Lying in bed last night and just before sleep for some reason this thread popped inot my head, possibly as I was ruminating on the rewiring of the bike at the time.

Why go to the trouble and expense of fitting an automatic delay when you already have a manual one fitted to the bike. When starting have the bike in neutral, frees up the left hand to toggle the kill switch. ie, switch in engine off position, hit starter, flick kill to engine on position when engine cranking at reasonable rate.

Just a thought.

Hmmm. On the Guzzi key on, start motor cranks no matter what position the kill switch.

This is the ultimate starter motor modification for me, done on what is to be my street bike.

Further to Julian's suggestion....I know of an XV Yamaha - another notoriously reluctant starter - which uses 18V to the starter courtesy of an extra 6v battery tucked into a spare space. Never fails to start...

Remember the NSU Prima scooter which had 2 X 6v batteries ? Set up to give 12V for electric starting and reverted to 6V running and charging.
