Problem diagnosed; one of the three countersunk allen screws that hold the backing plate on to the sprag clutch had unwound and jammed against the gearwheel thus spinning up the starter to destruction.

Hi Terry

may I recommend Loctite for the countersunk allen screws next time around....... ;)

Loctite alone will not do the trick.  If fitted in the normal manner, the screws will work themselves loose again, no matter how  much and which grade Loctite is used.

When re-fitting the (hopefully new) screws, tighten them and give them a good tap on the head and re-tighten.  You will find they proceed another 1/4 turn.  Repeat until the screw no longer moves, then, and only THEN, will it stay where it should.

Thanks guys, I intend using every belt and braces method to make sure that the little buggers never unintentially come out again!

Sorry Jimmy, just sent my blown starter off to Red.
Was wondering how to reassemble the sprag clutch, did a search on the forum and everything is now explained. Thanks everybody for making it seem very simple  :)

G'day Chris, just came  from fitting the sprag clutch with new springs and screws, next step will be fitting the new starter motor (thanks Red). Got the sprag together using PLC's method; push and twist. Now I have to go down the road and borrow a mate's rattlle gun.

Starter fixed ?  Hows the shims going, do you need any ?

G'day Ian,
Sprag clutch assembled, starter motor going in today. Will be all back together by the weekend but committed to my CFS brigade's open day over the weekend.

Forgot to add, shims will be for another day, thanks for the offer.

All back together and tested, all good :D. Thanks to everybody for your advice and to Red for supplying the parts.
Now paranoia sets in, listening for any suspect noises, graunching and other misbehavings.

Good to hear you back on the 3Cly.

I had a similar experience years ago just after purchasing my 71 SF in 72.

Accidentally engaged the starter at Hi-Revs spinning the internals to ashes.

This is what I learned from the failure.

Remind to say but grounding the Starter Solenoid through the Neutral Switch my have prevented the engagement and subsequent blow up if you inadvertently hit the Starter Switch while motoring - Specifically if your Starter Clutch is complaining.

I paid $1600 for the SF and another $900 for the Starter as I had to order if straight from the Berganzie factory back then and have it shipped to Canada.

Good Luck ;o)

Found out my problem was a faulty (original Bosch) starter relay. I tried the repaired starter motor without the chain connected (SF3) and it kept spinning even with the ignition off. I had to disconnect the battery to stop it. I've fitted a BMW K100 starter relay and its working ok now.
