My friend Piet is right, the answer is yes, bolts straight in.I have done it on my 1200 (TOG) and it was OK.The factory 180 starter is made by Bosch, and is black, the factory RGS starter is made by SJCE and is silver.I have no idea why, and it may not even be relevant, but the SJCE worked fine when I was useing my standard compression (or lower than standard) engine, but it was only just about up to the job when the race engine (10.5:1) was installed, but I did answer an ad a few years ago for a starter "for an RGS" and bought it, unseen,  through a club mag, and it was posted, when it arrived it as a black Bosch, so in fact originated from a 180, a nice lucky touch.I think you will find others agree that the Bosch starter is a better or more powerfull unit.

I would agree on my limited experience of both types on the same bike... However I had an SJCE rewound and uprated at the same time, it came back real nice. Sadly the motor had a disagreement with it and punched its lights out !

If it helps Clem,
My Jota 120 came with a black Bosch starter - I assume it is original.
You know the story, new bike comes along for 1982 - use up all the old Bosch units first.

I also have a SJCE unit that I bought new from OCT, word on the street is they are not so good as the Bosch unit? The Bosch and SJCE units will both fit with the motor gear running in a slightly different position.

Just to confuse the issue - there are  over 50 SJCE starter motors floating about that came off a "Moto Guzzi drone engine" - that I sold in the nineties - these use the bendix cog from the  bosch motor - think Keith had my last lot. - Regards - Phil

now I am realy confused,
I thought the Bosch had the bendix, and the SJCE did not,
did Phil's Guzzi type SJCE have a bendix?
I cant remember from whom I bought that RGS/Bosch/Black/with bendix, starter, but Keith seems tobe able to.
