Hi Folks, My 77 jota is due for its annual oil change, can someone tell me what size crush washer to use, i have used the same one a couple of times ( slapped wrist! ) and i'm getting a weep from the sump plug...i cant recall the washer size off the top of my head.

Thanks Phil.

Plug is M14. You could try a Dowty washer that some folk like. I just anneal a suitable copper item
Me too, just anneal it every time you remove the plug. I use a gas burner on the stove.
Interesting note: copper is the only metal that is quenched to anneal. Strange….

Dowty washers came on the fork drain bolts on my RGS, which I think is standard. I understand they’re meant for higher pressure applications but I suppose they have the advantage of being reusable? I use copper or aluminium and anneal every time so I don’t need to tighten it too much (I still have the original thread 😁)

Keith actually recomemds draining by loosening the gearchange cover...then the washer question doesnt arise nor of course the risk of stripping the drain bolt thread. Have to say I dont use that method..Then i guess there is that debate as to what oil may be left in the primary case...hey, is this an oil thread?😁

Ricardo Oro does exact;ly that Nick, never touching the sump plug, he has an aluminium sheet fashioned to hook onto the bottom frame tube, and extending inwards, so as to direct the oil into a catch tray. I never do that either. I like copper washers, reneal every time, blowlamp (map) and small pot of water always ready on the bench, hook with wire, heat to cherry, quench, takes longer to type it than to do it., I dont tighten very much, just enough to pinch and ALWAYS lock wire the plug.
