swingarms and frame bracing?

Paul, I too had to make some exhaust dents to clear my 750 frame. Like you all attempts failed to be satisfactory.
What exhaust sys have you used, Chris? The factory 2/1 fits straigh on once you have modified the centrestand and removed the sidestand lugging.
I've been searching th net for someone in Melbourne who can bend up a simple 1" steel pipe for my twin-system centrestand. No luck - not man places bend that small. A great place who used to do all Peter Allens mandrel bending decided to swap my 1" supplied pipe for stuff twice the gauge - great bends but too damned heavy - the springs will never retract the bloody thing! Frustrating - I'm at the point of buying my own simple pipe bender - no need for tidy mandrel bends. Finding good trades dudes these days is getting harder and harder as manufacturing moves offshore.

In latest Repco catalogue up here (bends 15mm - 50mm)

(Noticed it the other day and thought that would be handy........)

I?d be making sure that Repco bender did such tight bends before I bought it, rather than sending it back for a refund.
The alternative is to cut and weld using sections of bends, at least good tradesmen welders seem to be plentiful.
Doesn?t Wolfgang have SFC centrestands?

You might try going to a welding shop and get them to use their oxy acetylene set.
With a strategic area of your pipe cherry red you can get a lovely bend easily, athough don't over do it.

Hi Simon

I have a commercial oxy acetylene rig of my own, as well as few sandbags to lay the silencer out on. My dilemma is more whether to put a big dent in an original factory Laverda 3 into 1. My original failed attempt of just whacking it unheated with a hammer was to try to get away with the smallest dent possible, but the sad reality it is going to have to be a significant crease in the pipe to make it fit with the braced swing arm.

In preparation for the closing of the sale of my house end of the year and having to move all my garage stuff to storage for at least several months I have started the garage sorting process. Yesterday I dug out the various Laverda exhaust systems I have accumulated, I have some unused freshly ceramic coated header pipes and collectors, and various mufflers, will decide about an exhaust for the 79 1200 once I get everything sorted out.

I think the SFC stand frame lugging is different - plus I want to customise the length for my 17s. Tight bend isn't an issue, as I'll make a bend on two separate sections and weld the two halves together. By the time I find someone to do it and have four bends done I'll be halfway to paying for that rig, so I might have to consider it. There's also the foot hook to do, hoping that maybe the pipe bender would aid in making those as well.

Centre stand foot hooks are usually made from solid bar, but tube would be an option if you want to add some lightness.

Many years ago, my brother Tim made a side stand for his 3C. It's a strange looking contraption. Some of the Aussie guys may have seen it and wondered where it came from. The foot hook is a bent pushrod that came out of my old Triumph Bonneville  :D

Yeah, solid bar it is, I know. But thinking a strong tube bender might work well enuff to bend some solid rod when I make mine.

BTW, I bit the bullet and bought the Repco pipe bender. For some reason it came up at $175 instead of $199 at the register. If it works, I might sell it for $50 after i've made my stuff ... then again, maybe I'll keep it  :D

If you have oxy-acetylene gear, by far the easiest way to bend solid bar is to get it red hot and just bend it by hand. Being solid it won't crumple like tube, so you don't need a mandrel type bender.

It'll also bend cold but takes a lot more force and will work harden the spot where the bend is.
