Switch earth wire

Morning chums. I have a '77 Jarama and the horns have stopped horning.I know the horns are ok 'cos they work off the bike on a bench battery. I have pulled the L side switch apart, fiddled with the horn button and cleaned things up but to no avail. There is a black wire with a white tracer that is screwed into the switch body, on giving it a bit of a tug the whole wire came out of the loom. Question is... where does the 'other' end of this wire connect inside the headlamp? Can't really see it in a wiring diagram, it just shows an earth. Anybody any ideas?....Cheers..Stuart

Hi Stuart, I had the same with my SFC1000 from ?87. Exactly what you told that there was a wire connected at the switch but it was not connected to another wire in the loom (wich must had to go an earth point at the frame near the coils in my opinion).
I made a wire my self and connected it near the coils and voila... there was noise  :D

grtz and ride safe when the weather is going better (hopefully :-)    Ren?

Rene...that's what I wanted to hear, there's so many connections in the headlamp I probably couldn't work out where it came from!! Thank you....Stuart

I have this problem often. The switch needs earth from the handlebar. If there is corrosion at the switch where it touches the bar it has to be cleaned.
I put a piece of wire under the switch when I fix it so that it gets earth from the bar..
Also the switch inside, the horn button and the small spring must have clean metal.

Stuart (and others), better make a wired connection at the frame in stead of the front suspension such as the headlamp.
The problem is when you connect this wire at the handlebars or the headlamp all the current, I think minimal about 5 Amp. passes through the headstock bearings.
Because this is not a fixed connection with it's balls and bearing surface it detoriates the bearing and the grease inside and this is not what you want...

grtz,        Ren?
