T1 and T2 Laverda 650 i.e. fuel tank: where different

Hi, Laverda fans

I recently got myselves a Laverda 650 i.e., 1995 Kevlar series no. 198. :)

Full restoration nearly completed. Only fuel tank left to do. Found at internet an offer for a brand new tank, type ... 0032 for 1995 Laverda 650 from frame 1494 (T2).

However, my Laverda has frame 1221, so 'on paper' it should have fuel tank .... 0015W (T1).

No idea how crucial (small) differences are, i.e. would the T2 also fit my bike without problems?

Does anyone of you know?

Thanks so much in advance for sharing your wisdom here.

Kind regards,

Jos

Hi fellow 650 Kevlar rider :-)

As far as I'm aware there were 3 types of fuel tanks fitted to the 650/668
- aluminium with fuel sensor low on the side
- aluminium with fuel sensor on the top
- plastic with fuel sensor on the top
Mine started out with the first type, the seal in the sensor plug was not too resistant to being submerges in leadfree fuel so they tended to sweat / leak.
I managed to get a type 2 aluminium one and have had no issues since.
No idea on durability of the plastic ones, as far as I know they were fitted to the later 750 models and I have not heard of any problems with them, maybe recent fuels might kick up some trouble?

BTW, you're less than 30 minutes away, care for a cuppa?

regards
Tom

Hi Cosi a small correction, 668 models used both plastic and alloy tanks towards the end depending on the model, for example, the Strike had a plastic tank while the Diamante and Ghost had the alloy tank, there are four parts numbers for 650/668 models as they evolved through the nineties. The 750s used one plastic tank but it differed from the 668 plastic tank and had greater capacity.

I have not seen any problems with the plastics tanks themselves from using fuel with ethanol.

I think Jos mainly wants to know if any of the tanks will physically fit his bike - correct me if I'm wrong. It does sound like they should, but what would I know?!

Plastic tanks shouldn't have any problems with ethanol, It's polyester resin as used in fibreglass is the problem.
Epoxy is also good to go.
As for the tanks I wouldn't have a clue

There was big issues with the plastic tanks on Ducati Sports Classics, those models made in the 1990s I think, in the USA deforming around there mounts and being very hard to remove and remount, apparently put down to the high ethanol content of USA fuel. Kinda odd as Acerbis make all the plastic tanks on most Euro dirt bikes and I haven't heard any problems with them.

Dear all, grazi mille so far. Very useful info! I may come back to you later on, am now ion contact with my bike restorer again, discussing your suggestions. PS: my tank is full aluminum, so no plastic.

Dear Tom, good ID when my Laverda is finished :) ! Please contact me/sent an email to: brils.jos@gmail.com

Hi Jos,

If you can get an aluminium one that has all electrical connectors on top (more or less under your crown jewels, so to speak) then you're fine. They all interchange.
Will mail you.

regards
Tom

I have quite a few mates with large plastic tanks on their chook chasers and haven 't heard of any issues with fuel.
I also have several plastic fuel containers that haven't had any issues either.
If the pastic isn't fuel rated it shouldn't be used to store fuel.

Maybe that Ducati issue was caused by engine heat, don't know but there is an inconsistency with this issue.

Plenty of problems out there with plastic tanks deforming in contact with petrol.

Paul
I can vouch for that, Paul. My Monster has a plastic/nylon tank. Although I've only used premium fuel with no ethanol, most pumps have a shared hose for all three grades of fuel and there is typically a little or two of whatever grade the person before you pumped, left in the hose! Ducati replaced tanks for a while, but ended that program...before I discovered swelling in my tank. 🙄

The worst one I saw was a KTM tank on a 15 plate bike, the tank had "grown" by 3/8 of an inch and the clown that owned it had milled out the rear mount so he could get the bolt and washer on..

Dear all, thnx for all your suggestions. I got confirmed fromvthe Laverda spare parts provider in Italy that T1 and T2 are only marginally different so my T1 is interchangable by T2. Thus bought at eBay a new/unused T2, now on its its way from Nothingham UK (Aprilia Vechi) to NL. Pitty, however, that after the Brexit now need to pay 21% TAV etc ... Kind regards, Jos
