Taking of Head and Barrel

Hello all, bit of advice. Getting to the point of taking off the head and barrel on my Jota
Anyone have any tricks on how to control the two ends of the chain as I lift of the head and barrel
If one end does drop into the crankcases does the the cable guide in the bottom of the case stop the chain coming off the crank sprocket.
Any other tips on doing this.
Thanks Richard

The chain guide will stop it falling off the sprocket, but then the ends are a bugger to get to in the crankcases and might 'fold' inconveniently and miraculously trap themselves.

Add some long wire to the chain ends. As you lift off the head, get a buddy to control the chain and hold it up and out.

Or do it all upside down. Our buddies in Australia have the advantage there. :)

Tie them with a length of 5 Amp auto electrical wire round the rollers second out from the joining link.
Does it have to be 5 Amp?
Actually, I use a bit of steel tie wire about half a mm thick. It's easier to bend into the shape you want and holds its shape better than braided and insulated electrical cable.

Thanks for info, seems the only thing I have to worry about is what sort of wire I use. There’s me thinking it might be a bit more technically complicated. Thanks again, Richard
Don't trust that bottom chain guide to keep the chain on the crank sprocket. Keep it taught.
Might be better to take that chain guide off anyway because it will a) allow you to peer down the chaun tunnel more easily, b) pull the chain back up if you drop it, c) make sure it was mounted the right way around.

If you're going to follow Paul's advice, take note, and photographs, of the position of the joining link when the cams are lined up. I found it's easier to join the chain up when it joins on top of the exhaust cam sprocket with all marks lined up.Camchain Cylinder Head Laverda Handbook P26 (detail).jpg

I use shoelaces and tie them off to a couple of heavy spanners (or similar) so that the tension is maintained when you lift the head on the studs…

it all depends on how OCD you are ... sometimes I just approach a problem / fix / parts etc. as

" ... hour 23 of the 24 hour race, so get the f*cker out there and see if it holds!"
