Tank question

Aluminium tank from WBO racing Germany. They have 2 forms SFC and this one, I have bought bfore some 10 years whole set from them ( firing, tank, seat, front fender, all sfc opitk).

If i remember well, tank was 330? without Aero Cap .

WBO racing is i think still in bussines but not building new tanks any more.

Boba made replica of this parts from my bike in CF.

Tank made by a company called Bartel Aluminium. He was based in east London before moving to Northern Ireland. Not sure whether he is still in business.

WBO in Germany was importing his stuf from UK, maybe from Bartel ?.

I was talking to a very experienced aluminium welder (and motorcycle enthusiast) the other day about aluminium tanks. He said a lot of tank manufacturers use 1000 series aluminium (basically pure aluminium) which is quite soft and can be dented just by someone leaning on the tank. It also work hardens with vibration and can crack, especially if solidly mounted to the frame.

6000 series alloy is much harder and is much less likely to crack through vibration. It's what they use in aircraft components. The reason bike tank builders tend not to use it is that it's harder to beat into shape. But a good fabricator can do it. It's worth asking any supplier what alloy they use.

I had my first tank made by Bartel whilst I was a student/graduate living in London, '89/90. Asa had already done a number of these tanks for the German market, ordered I think by Uwe to fit the RG/SFC 1000 frame. I believe he made between 10 - 20 tanks at that time, the only other ones I have ever seen over the last 20 odd years have been German, Swiss & Austrian machines.

It did well but I did crash quite a lot...

Eventually I did have fuel delivery issues, caused by repeated impact/stress induced fractures and capacity reduction. Asa, now relocated to his home town in Northern Ireland did agree (reluctantly) to make me a fresh tank in about '98, but he needed to use my bent and battered original as a template.

These tanks are of quite thin ali sheet, 2 mm (?), all hand worked and gas welded.

My '98 tank has not been as stressed but has had it's moments and has a small, weeping crack 2/3's up around the headstock area. Probs an easy weld for them what knows what they is doing, however to me it is a rethink. I love the shape, looks and feel but 17 litre capacity is just crap.

Planning a total rebuild of my Jota, change of frame and much else, fuel capacity will be 30+ lt. With what I do it just makes sense.

The price for the bike is 8.500? I think, have seen it in Mobile.de.

The WBO Tanks were - I think - made by "the tank shop". they only made the top part, the lower part was welded by the WBO owner. That's why a) the same shape was available for different bikes and b) the under side was so damned ugly.

As mentioned before very soft and become a dent becouse someone put hand on it without presure.
Undersite was gly and not fiting, so i send it to another company to reveld it.
Boba CF tanks are real deal, perfect form .

If you wont aluminium tank then maybe from Aluminium Sauer or similar companies, they are good but not so cheep.

The tank Uwe Witt offered for the RGS Corsa btw. was a Harris Tank. Not sure though who made it for Harris, but it is definitely stronger than the WBO tanks. And heavier. I can tell, as I had both in hand. the WBO was light as paper, but that was as Romeo said due to very thin alloy (not sure which grade). The Harris/Witt tank on my shelf is WAY stronger, no chance to get a dent in by just leaning on the bike. However, it is also a bit heavier. But with 240Kilos overall weight of the bike, it is not the difference that REALLY counts...  ???
