tcip4.exe on Android

Hi,

I haven’t had anything to write for a while, but here’s something new (at least for me). I’ve been using Ignitech ignition on my Jota for years and I’ve always felt that a mobile version of tcip4.exe program would be nice. I actually contacted Ignitech maybe a year or two ago and asked if they had any plans to convert the app for mobile devices. The idea wasn’t new for them, but at that point they weren’t ready to do anything. I haven’t seen any progress, so maybe they are still not doing anything, who knows?

So, I was once again thinking about this and thought there must be a way to get the program working on Android. Even though the Android operating system is completely different from Windows OS. Luckily, there are clever people who do all kinds of application and OS porting and I was able to find a solution.

I installed Winlator emulator (winlator.apk) on my Android phone and then copied tcip4.exe and settings.ign to phone’s download folder. After doing the initial Winlator install and some minor settings, I was able to use the tcip4.exe on Android with no problem.

This is most promising. At this point I can confirm that the program works on mobile, but I haven’t had time to test it with connection to the actual ignition unit. I’m able to read the settings file, modify it as I please and save the new settings. Connection to tcip4 box requires the usage of com to usb cable and maybe a Prolific driver on Winlator, so that needs to be tested.

But in conclusion there may finally be a way to easily program the unit on the road, if there’s need to do it. It is far easier to carry a mobile device than a laptop while travelling.

Any thoughts?

Cheers,

Sami

Thoughts? Yes, impressive..but life is complicated enough!!😂😂

There is a bloke in Oz building ignitions for older Ducatis but his selling point is wireless data logging and every bell and whistle as an addon as well all via your phone including carb balance and Air Fuel ratios for each carb. It's called Hand Held Dyno. And typically it's another pathetic FACEBOOK link stupid-arsed site 80% of the planet won't assess. So live wireless control via your phone would be a good thing.

Best look where you are going rather than fuck about with more ways to make it run badly?

It logs data, so you can see after the bike stops what the fuel-air ratio is. It also checks the balances your carbs, never seen anyone try that while riding. That would be some trick to achieve. All done in the safety of your shed after a ride. Not while your actually riding the bike, obviously.

..give it a go? After sorting the zillion suspension settings out?

real world comms are a problem for some emulators ie cross platform programs run, yet the actual external data in out is another issue, may well be solved by now, USB comms are very complicated though look simple. j

What exactly is your problem, why the personal attack? Cape is looking at replacing the laptop interface with the Ignitech with a phone. That sounds like a great idea, my post was about using your phone and a nice cheap kit instead of a mega-expensive Motect Data logging system that is in prototype development locally and being beta-tested around the world. Are you worried about learning something new? Does that scare you? What is the reasoning behind this aggression? I am trying to understand your concern. Are you ok? Apparently, your offended by me and some fiddling I am doing to the suspension on my bike and that needs your correction. So any positive input you have would be nice, no, so only trolling you can supply. So in closing, DELEATE, happy to comply with an Admin request for civility.

I have tested RS232 cable with android and the phone recognises it, so half way there. I will try to connect the ignition unit when this beautiful winter weather (-30) gives up...

Ok noted, RS232 is a serial comms of the day, many the hour engaged at win system calls, only a passing knowledge of USB process handling. Main experience was on wine for Linux platform ( some others also ), in developing platform for MS derived assemblers on Linux. Emulation for processor specific Atmel uProcc was handy, real world input output not nearly so.

Perhaps Cape, you will have a win, have no idea if ignitech reports real time data transfer or simply burst mode update, system op updates or real time data, others will illuminate no doubt. Only of passing interest here. Hope you do have a win Cape... wins make life enjoyable.

The speed of modern uProccs can make a difference to emulations, large gap in virtual hardware interfaces however. As an aside, the iis control program was written in Intel assembler, some 100K of source file.... those days are long dead.... "real men program in assembler", from my old dying hand..a smile here. j

I am picturing a USB-C to RS232 cable, is this what you are saying? I couldn't imagine such a beast would exist. If you get it working, I would look at trying it. More convenient to use my phone than firing up the old laptop I use in the shed.

Edit: I Googled "USB-C to RS232 cable" and saw heaps of them. Should have done this before replying.

I might look at this Winlator emulator thing and have a go at what you have done Cape.

If i understand the indicated conversation, Cape has phone USB to RS232 ( RS422/485 functionality perhaps also ), are you indicating, USB/RS232/USB functionality, as stated, superfluous at the least... HTH j
I couldn't imagine such a beast would exist.

...or the most novel of all, Phone BlueTooth to stand alone hardware USB dongle... may exist already.... wild world these days.

Ideal would be Bluetooth ( or direct IP ) interface on the ignitech or additional hardware module to do the same, not sure what a operating HT ignition would do to the SS rf data. Fair chance it would be negative. j

Hi Cape,

I think this is a great idea. Ignore the relentless thread-hijacking negativity from the trolls of this forum and please keep this thread updated when your shed thaws out and you make some more progress! I'll be most interested if you can make it work. (y)

Cheers

Nothing personal at all Vince, no need to throw your toys out of the pram. My poor attempt at humour didnt travel well, obviously. I just think its all huge overkill...hold on, Im sounding like a back to points guy, which I am not!

What he's doing certainly looks good on paper, Vince. And feedback from testers is pretty positive (or rather, the feedback that gets posted is ... ;)). But I get the impression he's genuine

I particularly like the idea of having carb balancing as a function.

Michael Arnott's is his name, btw.

Not sure why any of you need to wait for winter to abate, straight forward test for progress, type of initiative. Does the ignitech exe ( executable file for MS ) run on Win based devices? Does the ignitech application program require DLL and or API calls, they could answer that in 5 seconds or less. Perhaps Win CE based devices will support Ignitech Native application setup target device. Or does the ignitech setup prog require full featured Winxx platform support?

Or am i missing something like the whole bus or just the destination sign? Perhaps i need to keep out of this intrigue, yes that is a good idea.... back to my R and D bench.... pot of tea for company. j

I probably need to apologise for my cat kicking, and lack of sense of hummer. The last thing I want is to discourage any helpful brainstorming. I think this is an important development and needs support.
