Telemetry my dear Watson

why on earth do you want to pay 49 quid for one - they cost ?27,49 on ebay germany - if you need help to buy one ask me!!

ebay article no.  260855131316

Well, I am not actually buying one as I don't really care about how hot my oil gets when I am riding the bike. Just posted it as an alternative to electrickemajiggery that is already available.

whew - i'm actually quite relieved to hear it - however the offer of help holds good for anyone who can't speak german or pay in germany, lots don't use paypal.

Have been working away on this and have the code up and running for the analogue dials and talking to the GPS.

Thanks for all the suggestions - like the coffee thermometer on the Enfield!

SteveB - what device did you use? - I cannot find an thermistors which can take the temperatures expected.

Bike is a 73 SF1 - probably the most sacrilegious thing to attach a hi tech monitoring system to!

It is a square wave pulse, +5v I think.. switchable to allow for full or half engine speed sensing from whatever tacho head is fitted.

And to think I got ridiculed for threatening to put an electronic cruise control on argy, which is one of the things I'm gunna do while I'm laid up.....

BTW great project, will be interested to see how it goes. I have an Arduino oscilloscope, it's awesome!

What temps are you expecting?  Should be well under 200C, I typically only see around 130 under load IIRC.  Most glass sheathed NTC thermistors will do 300 or so - if your CHT's at 300 you're about to have an expensive day! :D  I wasn't too picky and used what came to hand, will try to find out what it was.

And as for what's sacrilegious or not, my ICR SFC racebike has full datalogging of track position, speed, gear, rpm, tps, front and rear suspension movement....

Cheers
SteveB

PS Moved this whole thread to the Technical forum.

Thanks for moving it - I had been thinking it was more of a technical thread now.

It is coming along quickly - software for dials is working, basic temperature sensor is hooked up and the whole lot is connected to the electronic ignition so I have RPM info in the display, speed is coming from GPS at the moment. There are a lot of wires hanging off the IOIO as this is my testing device, I have another one which will be the bike specific one once I have done all the prototyping.

Here it is in action:

I thought the head would get hotter than that - can always try it and see, thermistors are not that expensive!

You could record footage on the devices camera, I am not sure about how to connect an extra camera to an android.

Cost so far is about $60.

After riding modern stuff,I would love a digital gear position indicator.Get a bit sick of looking for 6th gear.Probably not so important now with the F1 cams, got solid drive from 2k in all gears.Still think it would be a handy thing.

Gear position indicator is a matter of getting accurate speed - the rpm should be pretty accurate but GPS speed will no be stable enough. I have seen someone who has implemented a speedo for an electic bike on an IOIO so should be easy to make that work, just need to find a way of neatly mounting the magnet and sensor.

Am off to jacar to get a voltage regulator and some other minor bits and pieces to get the power from the bike and set up the battery voltage display.

The second one would suck if you missed a gear, not uncommon on our old girls. Would be reading the wrong gear until next time you go through neutral.....

The theory that my bike changes gear every time I move the lever is sadly not verified by empiric observation.

Not sure a comparison of rpm of engine and rear wheel will give any better result but hey ho, give it a go.

Do any of our technical telemetry people monitor exhaust gas temperature? From my experience this is de-rigeur for engine monitoring and gives a primary warning that something has gone amiss.
My first 2 years racing I had the use of a set of gauges to check that everything was safe. The sensors took temp at the start of the header pipe.

I am looking at infrared sensors for the head temp as these can be mounted under the tank and will not be visible. These could easily be used to measure the header pipe temperature as you just point them in the right direction.

For oil temperature is it possible to zip tie a small sensor to the dipstick or is there a chance it will obstruct something important in the crank case?

For gear indicators - I would of thought that when this is factory implemneted it would be a sensor on the the internal gear selection shaft of the engine (this might be possible on the Laverda but beyond the scope of this project as I was only thinking of of gear position sensor as a side effect of other things I can measure).

Am going to put together a neater, cased version today.
