Test for spark

hello

I am trying to fire up my 3C and cannot find a spark. I read on this forum that I must not earth a plug as it will harm the coils, I have tried that already so I hope I have not caused damage.

The bike started four-years ago but has been standing ever since.  I recently had to rewire some of the bike so I am not sure if the coils are charged but there is certainly voltage getting to the coils.

Is there a procedure to test the coils to see if there is a spark. I thought of holding a plug in my hand but my memory of the pain that ensues has put me off.

Regards

If you don't earth the plug you won't get a spark at all...

If you don't earth the plug you are in danger of frying the ignition system...

If you don't earth the plug you are in danger of frying the coils...

You must have gotten something seriously mixed up. ::)

If you have experienced pain while testing your coils, they are obviously working... :D

Eh up

Remove the plugs and stick them into the suppressor caps, lay the plugs onto the engine & hit the starter button. The plugs need to be earthed in order to work. You can of coarse hold the plugs if you wish. Good if your heart needs a wee kick start!!

If there is no spark at any plugs it may be the plugs which are shot or perhaps the caps at faulty. Recheck plugs  but use a new plug.  Unscrew the caps from HT leads and hold open end of lead slightly away from the engine case. Turn it over and check for spark from lead.

If that all fails then you'll need a test light or multi meter to check ignition circuit

Good luck

Thanks

I did the usual with a plug. Pushed into the cap, pressed the tip of the plug against the cam-cover and turned the engine. Nothing.

How do I test the circuit with a meter, please?

Regards

Did you try a new plug?
Did youcheck caps & leads?
Have you checked the fuse? 25amp I think
If the bike has been laid up for a long while it may be a case of a bad connection in relation to the ignition due to corrosion.

Does your 3C have the original ignition system, or has it been replaced with something else?

If it is the original system (CDI / black box or more accurately HKZ) and you tried to check for a spark without earthing ALL the plugs, then you will have most likely fried the CDI black box.  :'(  There is no easy way to test it apart from substitution with a known working unit.

Since you mention voltage getting to the coils, I'm guessing we may not be talking about this original system.  However, turning the engine over with ignition on but without earthing the plugs will likely have fried that unit too.  :(
