This grandma version is new to me and needed to google it.

Sheez an old saying mate. My great grandmother used to say it. Well, at least she wooda had I known her let alone who she was.

Nothing to do with Laverdas, motorcycles or Aussie sports, but the Aussie health system.

You may or may not be aware that the Australian Government is rolling out its "My Health Record" system.

The system is supposed to capture all your health records that are input by your GP, dentist, pharmacist, or other health provider. The purported reason is to make your health record more portable if you change doctors, visit a specialist or whatever. All the new doctor has to do is go on-line and look up your history.

I have concerns that the system is ill-conceived and poorly put together. So far, nobody has been able to guarantee that your identity and health info stored somewhere on-line will be secure. Even the bloke overseeing the development of the system reckons it's crook.

The one good thing about it is that your participation isn't compulsory. Australian citizens have until 15th October to opt out. Anyone who hasn't opted out by then will be automatically included in the database - presumably forever.

I'm not making a recommendation either way, but do I encourage you to do your own research and decide whether you want to be involved. There's plenty of info on the web. Just "Google My Health Record".

I have decided to opt out after reading comments like "a major honey pot of health data? waiting to be hacked or made available on the dangerous dark web" and "it is like having your whole personhood exposed in terms of your condition, medication, past acts, and more?

If I want any relevant health data sent to another doctor I'll arrange it the old fashioned way.

If, like me, you don't want a shit-load of your personal information stored on what by all expert evaluations will be an insecure database, you can opt out here:
https://www.myhealthrecord.gov.au/for-you-your-family/opt-out-my-health-record

I opted out, but what really pisses me off is you need to provide them with identifying information to do so, medicare card number, MDL number, address etc. Who protects that info. Feckers.

Here lays the two edge sword. Consider you are taking life saving drugs, and you live in Sydney, you are in Perth, visiting your dying rich Aunty, hoping to be added to
her will.  :D

On the way home, you hit a kangaroo and you are taken to Ceduna hospital, passed out. The Drs can access your records, and see that you are on specific medication to clear up your syphilis, herpes, diabetes and all those nice things while they fix you up without sticking a needle into you which could interfere with your medication.

I?m not a Dr, but reckon it could be handy.

On the other hand, if my wife was a Dr, she would have access to my records, and would be rather curious where I picked up the syphilis ..........  :o

Oops, I better opt out.

It is indeed a two-edged sword. Unfortunately the world is full of good people and arseholes: The good people would have come up with the scheme for all the right reasons for the benefit of everybody, even those stuck out in the middle of Whoop Whoop with a dose.
The arseholes of the world have always and will always try to take advantage of every situation.
I suspect that our medical records are already accessible to any arsehole who knows how to manipulate the system.
I opt to stay in, the benefits out way the draw-backs IMHO.

It is a tricky one - and i suspect that profit-driven health insurers would already have easy and ready access to your health history - you'd certainly find out if you made a claim. i'm trying to balance in or out against the fact that the powers probably already have loads of personal info about me. I'm trying tp think of the ways the dark side would manipulate my info to their advantage.

I don't do Faceache for that reason Q. It's enough that people know my hobby from this forum. Let alone all my other life secrets. I have my daughters use an alias, that only their friends and family know.

Here's an example of what happens: My car was parked across the road from a hotel in Ballina when I was checking in, when away for work.

My daughter sent me a text that night, of my car parked where it was while checking in.

Someone, she didn't know had taken a picture of it, posted it on a car forum, it was sent to her boyfriend by someone he knew. The boyfriend didn't know it was mine, and he sent it to my daughter on Faceache, she told him it was my car.  :o
I have sent you a text showing you the picture she sent me.

Can you think of the ramifications if a blonde was sitting in the passenger seat  :o

I think you'll find The Dark Side knows more about you than you can remember yourself.

Yeh, think most info already out there for those that really want it.
Reminds me a bit of some years ago when Hawke (or was it keating) wanted to introduce an Aus Id card. I thought it was a fair idea but there was helluva blue over it. The reality is all the info was there just on fragmented systems in various public services ::) and no one has been able to clean it up since.
Of course health might be a bit different but I can't for the life of me see what any one would do with my records (apart from the obvious bombardment of targeted advertising)
Anyway, think anyone that really wanted should just read classic motorcycle internet forums - the old buggers on those tend to spill their guts pretty easily..... :o :D

I don't understand the technicalities of cyber security, but I think the concerns with "My Health Record" relates to the lack of security of people's health and personal info.

By design, the system has to be accessible to doctors and other health care providers. So how difficult would it be for a hacker to gain access? Not very difficult is the apparent answer according to cyber security experts. They're saying it's about as secure as a house of cards on a windy day.

I'm careful how I share my on-line info. I keep my email address as private as I can, I'm not on Facebook, don't use twitter or snap chat or any shit like that, I haven't given my DNA to Ancestry.com.  Like Chris, my only social networking is this forum, and I have control of what info I choose to publicise or put in my profile. Some might call me paranoid, but I've been a victim of identity theft before, so perhaps a little bit of paranoia is not a bad thing.

It's not just your health info. Your record will by necessity contain enough info to identify you. Name, address, date of birth, Medicare number, etc. Pretty useful for someone who wants to pinch your identity for nefarious reasons.

I am in no way advocating use of this system, but I thought your concerns were for your health records and that's fair enough if you don't want them broadcast.
As for other id info etc, I'm afraid that ship sailed long ago Cam, unless you are really "off the grid" and don't have , licence passport, vehicle rego, property etc.
Even for health records, I doubt my GP goes overboard with his security and I've dealt with a few hospital admins which would raise serious questions!!
As I say, I am not arguing the merits of the system and in fact I still haven't decided whether to opt out, but I can see some benefits (emergency situations etc) and do think we are always exposed to the fraudsters out there anyway and I do hate the way our public service (incl health) have such inefficient systems and lack of cohesion at times................

The English language is a rich source of strange and interesting words.

To quote one of my favourite social commentators, Stephen Fry
?English certainly has the largest vocabulary ... by a long, long, long, long way. Rather as China is to the rest of the world in population, English is in the population of its words.?

I don't know wether he's right or wrong, but it's the massive vocabulary that makes English such an exquisite tool for subtleties of expression. It also makes it very difficult for anyone to master, especially those who learn it as a second language. I wish I had the language skill to be as eloquent as Mr Fry.

What's a castrated sheep got to do with any of that?  ???
