Not logical, but plausable.I think I’ve found the problem.
Another odd one, though…
When it’s cold, it won’t spring back. But when the engine’s warm, it does!
I now suspect the seal on the gearshift shaft.
When the engine is warm, I reckon this seal is more supple. When it’s warm, the shift lever works perfectly well and springs up and down nicely.
I replaced this seal when I’d taken the left side off to fit a new primary chain and replace the clutch rubbers.
In my opinion, you can’t go far wrong when fitting this seal
Does that sound logical?
The primary cover is positively located by the crank outrigger bearing, but can swivel around this to a degree. The pivot pin of the primary chain tensioner doesn't help much to prevent this due to the short length of its' engagement in the cover. A slight misalignment may cause the shifter shaft to bind. Thermal expansion may be just enough to restore proper running clearances.
I'd simply loosen the cover bolts and give the cover a tap up or down to see if the shifter frees off.
