The Things Which Get Squirrelled Away

Oppressive regimes restrict freedom through the threat of physical harm or death in the interest of 'law and order' - you do it OUR way or you pay the price. It will never make it right. The anti-Vietnam protest movement of the late 60s early 70s would have resulted in the murder of many under the pretext of 'retaining control'. Corporal punishment is just an extension of the same principle.

Unfortunately The Handmaid's Tale is looking far too real for my liking in far too many parts of the world.

It's just so 1984, Dobble Speak, Fake News it's the same thing. It used to be called flip floping, but now it's blatant in-your-face lying with no fucks given. Straying close to that forbidden subject. Better stop now.

We never got meals at our Government schools. All we got was tiny glass bottles of milk every day. Good in winter, but not so good if it sat about in the Sun for a few hours before Morning Tea. By tiny I mean 80mm tall and 40mm in diameter. From memory, it was designed to reduce Rikets,

I used to go to a very old fashioned school that had an upper sixth library, I was sent there as a detention and I found that along with the Telegraph they had a subscription to the Motorcycle weekly that had gone back years.I would cut out those marvellous Laurie Watts hand drawn technical drawings of Hesketh engines to take home. We also had Saturday detentions, come in and pick litter up 9-12. Girls had a strict dress code, no short skirts or over the knee socks🥵 but would have to wear gym knickers to do sport, I had the job of pinning numbers on girls for sports day once. The upper sixth could smoke with parents permission , how civilised.

All this talk of caning has inspired me to tell my tale of an encounter with a bamboo cane.

In the 80’s I was working as a helicopter mechanic in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia and living in a company apartment building across from the main office building. We were having a company party and drinking homemade beer, we ran out and I walked across the street to get some more and on my return I was stopped by a carload of the religious police. They looked in my bag, opened a bottle and hauled me off

And that’s my caning story.

FFS …. your workmates must’ve been really pissed off with you, for not bringing back the beers.🍻

I too remember Saturday morning detention, you had to arrive in school uniform and one autumn blustery saturday I was detailed to sweep the two playgrounds with a standard size brush to collect the leaves, the wind meant that this was an impossible task and the leaves were still falling anyway, it was a private school and to me it just seemed like their cheap way of getting a menial task done, , so minor was the offence I cant even recall what is was, probably poor results in something academic, no doubt, I made sure my uniform was pretty much ruined with dirt and dust, I even felt guilty getting on the bus for home at 1300, with many leaves still evident, my father was not at all pleased with my apearance on arrival and asked me what the punishment was, I told him..... guess who drove me to school on Monday? and my whole week was deliberate discriminary hell as a result of that! the headmasters car wouldnt run on Friday morning and was recovered by the local garage, three potatoes up the exhaust pipe rodded in with a broom handle, he never left the rear of the car facing the grass again.

When I got eventually released and put on a plane home, by coincidence three of them were on the same flight! I don’t remember very much of the flight to London…..

Yes, that is true, but he was given a choice: Electric Chair, Lethal injection, or Firing Squad (3 shooters); his victim did not get a choice. The guy chose the Firing Squad because he did not want to take a chance that the drugs used in the lethal injection were expired or diluted, true.
Not much of a choice to be fair, but we have some serious wrong ‘uns in our jails that cost the tax payer a fortune that should have been strung up on day one.

Anyway, back on topic:

The first, and only photograph of me on my Laverda, taken when it was brand new, back in '76. We didn't have phones with cameras, back then.
A Polaroid, gone wrong, but I really liked the sepia quality. Despite being old, the colour and clarity make it look much older.

Just too many death penalty convictions are overturned with either incompetent investigations or new Science, eg DNA years later. As I said as a kid I remember hearing about Oz's last hanging and how barbaric having a Government system built to kill people. Yes back to bikes, I have only one pic of my 1976 T140v Bonie. It's a tiny dot in front of a mate's FC Holden and it's a complete accident it was in that pic. Yep nobody had a camera much back in the late 1970s

Trawling through some old La Vera Vistas, I came across this one:
The 1997 Breganze Laverda meet, in pre-Euro days.
Should bring back memories for some.Breganze Meet '97.jpg
