The Things you Read.

Here in Canada police are exempt from the "Motor Vehicle Act" .... ie they can run a red light, speed, use their cell phone whilst driving etc ..... but they are not exempt from the "Criminal Code" so if running a red light, speeding or using their phone can be deemed a criminal act, as in Dangerous Driving, then they can be charged.
Careless Driving is Motor Vehicle Act. Dangerous Driving falls under the Criminal Code. Gotta love interpretation.

The very experienced Cop in this case thought he was utterly exempt from Traffic Law and obviously, he wasn't. There was another alleged case a while back where a Hwy Cop in a marked car T-boned another car while Aledgaly he was doing 140kph without lights and sirens through heavy traffic in suburbia going after another driver on the phone. The other driver ended up in a Vegative State for the rest of her life. They love pulling sudden U-turns in crazy dangerous places, that also caused a big accident recently. Do your job but let's not kill others at the same time.

I had one do that in front of me not long ago. I was driving my car behind him on the Midland Hwy (110kph limit) when he suddenly hit the brakes and did a screeching, tyre smoking U-turn so that he could chase a car going the other way. I was following a couple of seconds behind, so I had plenty of time to hit the anchors, but he scared the bejesus out of me anyway. I didn't know what the fuck was going on until the lights and siren came on as he took off in the opposite direction.

The 210 offence was a section of the Stuart Highway that drops from 130 to 100 for a turnoff and back to 130. He was pursuing someone doing 108... NT, unlike WA, allow bike patrols to chase. In W.A. police banned bike pursuits after a couple of officers got splattered, one on a popular scratching road doing a 'training run'. They don't really need to chase in WA anyway. The place is riddled with Chynah style face recognition cams.

I saw exactly the same thing happen on the Kings highway between Canberra and the coast a few years back, though thankfully a couple of hundred metres ahead of me. Dickhead unmarked copper does a full tyre smoking handbrakie turn at 100kmh in the middle of a busy highway. He even stuffed it up and had to have a second go at it, there were cars going every which way trying to avoid him. All to book someone for going a few kmh over. It was absolutely dangerous and reckless. I felt like complaining to the police standards but thought better of it. It would be one of the few situations where a dashcam would have been perfect for demonstrating just how stupid and irresponsible the copper had been.
 
Cop car did one of these handbrake 180s in front of my niece after overtaking her on a 60km suburban road to pull her over in the “stolen” car she was driving. There was no need for the Starskey and Hutch style manoeuvre, flashing lights would have sufficed to pull her over. Turned out to be mistaken number plate id, but frightened the shit out of her.
 
They are obviously influenced by USA Cop videos where every second person is deemed to be Armed. My Brother had the same thing happen, there is a 4 lane road locally that goes down into a valley with no sidestreets, posted at 60kph but everybody does 80, no one in their right mind would pull a U-turn there except the idiot cop who did and then ticketed him for 15ks over. Another incident was that recent club ride where someone got a ticket for 20 over. 100ish in an 80, well outside suburbia but the dangerous bit was the CLOSE overtake in my lane while a car was coming the other way of me and 3 or 4 others by a bike Cop. If another club member did that to me he would have copped, pun, an ear full for getting so dangerously close. These riding Gods do a months bike training and suddenly there Marc Marquez. He couldn't even wait till there was no one coming the other way. The problem is they have zero accountability and it shows in how they act, till someone dies and the cover-up starts. Maybe there not all like this but lots I meet are.

would have been most helpful and made my offence seem way milder... :unsure:

I wondered why license plates couldn'd be lighted panels in the body work of the vehicles that has an adhesive plastic strip with a bar code printed on it. The cops could use a scanner to read the bar code. Of course there would also be numerals.

Don't give them ideas. Pretty soon there will be a transponder in all vehicles and you will be informed the instant you speed and a ticket will be emailed a moment later.

That’s not necessary as new cars are having software installed that will prevent you from driving* faster than the posted speed limit.
 
AFAIK the onboard computers in most if not all new cars record the last 15 minutes or so of data such as speed, throttle position, braking, GPS, etc and are often subpoenaed after accidents.

There was a recent case in Los Angeles where the wife of a prominent physician struck and killed some kids in a crosswalk. The data from the car showed that she was traveling at 85 mph a few hundred yards from the intersection and was also going 55 when she hit the kids triggering the airbags and shutting off the fuel.

She made it about a mile away before the car died and the computer showed that she tried to restart the car 28 times attempting to escape. She had been drinking, but her lawyers showed up at the hospital and delayed the blood test until her BA level was nearly legal.
 
Recently a cop pulled me over for speeding, after following me for 42klm.

Almost ever truck I passed coming the other way told me he was behind me, so I wasn’t going to even fart for fear of being stopped

My max speed allowed in that state is 90kph. 81 tonne of truck, I’m braking hard going downhill, by the time his party lights came on my gps read 88. He fined me for 1-9klm over 90. What my offending speed was ????? 1, maybe 2klm over??

The lecture about how dangerous my speeding was like a 500 page novel.

While going through my logbook he looked over at me and said: I’ll not have you lean on my vehicle please, go stand in front of the truck, which I did. He looked back at me and asked if I was obscuring the registration plate on purpose

I asked him when the state laws on speed limits for the road train I was driving were going to be aligned with the state I live in (10kph faster) because my speed he clocked me at isn’t dangerous there.

“I’m not going to argue politics with the likes of you”

He found a bald spot (about the size of my hand, on an otherwise perfectly good tyre) on one of my 46 tyres and deemed the vehicle defective, gave me a lecture on the dangers of bald tyres

“Have it rectified by the morning or I will make sure you never drive in this state again” 3:30pm the day before a public holiday, I found a place that replaced the tyre at 5:15pm. I then had to have the defect notification signed of at a police station……. I stopped at 5 police stations on route, not one had a cop manning them.

I ended up stopping a highway patrol car to sign it off.

$591 and two demerit points.

If you want to talk about bad cops, that fucker tops them!

That just gives me the shits. What a prick, giving the whole force a bad name.
I feel similar when I see motorcyclists acting like idiots, and inevitably pushing up my insurance levies...
 
Similar to you Chris, in SA, guy followed me for 1/2 an hour, I knew he was there. He finally pulled me over near Murray bridge for a breath test, I must have been boring him to tears in my 1955 MG, which at the time would struggle to do 100km/h.
