Threading handlebar clamp holes

I want to mount my GPS on the RGS and am thinking of using a 1" RAM ball with an M10 threaded stud.  I am thinking of cutting the thread into one of the handlebar clamp bolt holes (which have clearance for an M8 bolt) as I don't use the bar pad.  Would I be OK doing this, I obviously don't want to do anything that would compromise the strength of the upper triple clamp?

I used one of there U shaped 7/8 inch ball mounts around the handlebar.  .

Thanks Vince, but there ain't much room on the clipons for that clamp and I'm not overly enamoured with the looks of the thing anyhow.

Hi Regiie

I am using this in my car and on my ZX 14 for my iPhone 6+

for the RGS, with or without the pad there is not a lot of room on the bars, is there? If you don't like the Steelie idea, I would probably not drill and tap anything, but rather make a short thick bracket to mount off the already threaded unused mirror boss, then use whatever mount you intend to use for your device off of your new bracket.

for whatever it is worth, the Steelie mount has worked really well on my ZX 14 all summer, and it works really well in my car.

Hi Reggie,

I have a custom-made mount for a Garmin GPS on my RGS that I fitted about 11 years ago. Can't say that I use it very often though.... ::)

Pics should explain all. The ball mount was made to fit the existing thread in the handlebar casting. The ball mounts give sufficient adjustment so that the GPS doesn't foul the fairing or the view of the clocks.
Shout if you need any more info.

Alan :)

Here's how I did it.
Waterproof case with mount supplied.
Wired up waterproof USB port.
Fitted mount to inner fairing.

Thanks all.  I have Firestorm master cylinders so no mirror mounts.  I have a mount for my Zumo on the GS so I have a good idea how it will all sit if I use the clamp hole, but of course I could make up a small bracket for the ball as I have done for the 12v power socket.  Just think that a ball in the clamp hole is a neat solution IF it won't weaken anything- I shouldn't need to drill the hole.  Grant- I think the position of yours would be too close for my feeble eyes. :D

Reggie if the ram mount has a hole below the ball tap it out m6 and use a long m6 bolt cheers Geoff

Make a plate to cover the bar clamp holes, then thread the plate to whatever size you need.
I have a template (somewhere) for the one I made to hide the holes & mount my clocks.
Could scan it and mail it to you if you want.

Ta, but no need, the 8mm RAM mount seems to fit fine, just need to monkey around and get the right length arm and whatnot.
