Tig welding

I just had a repair done by tig, I was told not to load the repair for at least 5hr, never heard that before. Is this BS or correct. Alining crystallin structure? MY full on guess.

If it's an aluminium in the class of air hardening alloys, it could be right. Some of them don't develop full strength for some time after heating.

I remain sceptical. Heat treated metals will age and gain strength as residual stresses dissipate. But this happens over a very long period. Typical time scales are weeks, months or years, not a few hours.

Its passed its load test, one of 4 seat connections on my computer chair. Stupid design, a 5mm thick plate welded to 1mm thick steel tube and chromed to boot. The welder did an excellent job while I waited for $30 cash.

::) he did an excelent job while you waited for 30 $? So - letting him work pays you actually? weird. typically the longer I wait at a work shop, the more money gets out of my pocket...  ???

 :-*

His work is guaranteed for 5 hours only! :D

That's probably closer than anything else!
The bloke should have just said the guarantee is valid until you are out of sight!

If you are going to weld steel and worry about stresses and brittleness intruduced by the weld process then you need to conduct Post Weld Heat Treatment to reduce these stresses. This is quite an involved process and not to be undertaken without a lot of thought.

Anyone tried pulse MIG for alloy?

I like the fact that you can weld in more positions than TIG.

i.e. not having to completely strip a bike frame bare and rotate the bastard to hold the TIG puddle level. I have MIG welded a couple while still a rolling chassis, all positions. Not the prettiest, but I don't get much practice.

Double pulse creates the stacked dime finish like a TIG as well.

Apparently some flux cored wires combined with the correct shield gas can provide excellent metal qualities in the heat affected zone for exotic steels as well.

A lot of automotive manufacturers these day actually stipulate pulse mig welding for all the alloy body components which are getting more and more common place these days.

Wow back in the day we used to oxy weld alloy, in fact what am I say still do.....

I have been TIG welding for over 35 years and have probably welded alloys that most people have never heard of and NEVER, have I come across a material that when welded properly, and naturally cooled to ambient temperature, wasn't able to be used as required.
Aluminum just need to be cooled or possibly re-heat treated, but where the 5 hours comes from is a mystery to me.

On the subject of warranties, I once bought a bottle of limited edition and rather pricey rum at a promotion event at my yacht club sponsored by Bundaberg rum. It came in a fancy cardboard box. As I was carrying it back to my car the arse fell out of the box. The bottle dropped out and smashed on the concrete. It was a tragedy. I felt like getting down on my hands and knees to lick it up. But I didn't. My grieving process was limited to inhaling the aroma for a bit. I went back and asked if the product came with any warranty, seeing as it was their packaging that failed. The bloke said "Yes, it comes with a concrete warranty. It's guaranteed until it hits the concrete". :(

I took a bottle of Black Sambooka to a BYO Italian joint (to impress my new girlfriends upity friends that I was meeting for the first time), after the meal and a 'few' reds I gave the bottle to the waitress and asked if she could supply the table with shots of flaming Sambooka, she returned and put the half empty bottle in front me. And brought out a tray of shot glasses, with a nice blue hue coming off the top.

For a reason that I can't explain  ::), I put my hand over my glass to put out the flame, which then stuck the shot glass to the palm of my hand due to the vacuum ..........  :o it hurt like hell, so I shook it off, knocking over the bottle in front of me and setting the whole table on fire :-[  No guarantee I'll ever be allowed back into the joint.

No ..... the relationship didn't last long after that :D

I have heard that some booze retailers will replace a bottle if you supply the neck with the cap/cork/seal still intact ... no idea why they would do that??? Dropping the bottle is surely user error?

If you drop it in the store, they will replace it FOC. Well, that's my experience.
