Tips for racing a Jota

Apparently there is an interesting discussion going on at the moment re fees collected by the Sporting Car Club when they don't actually have ownership of the circuit. May only be hearsay and gossip ...

Racing in WA would have to be a joke!! They have banned motorcycles from Perth's only circuit of which is a joke in itself, all 1.6 km and like 5 corners. So now we're left with a circuit about 200km from Perth that's about 1km long. For such a wealthy mineral rich state we can't even build a circuit of international standards let alone upgrade what we have into something interesting.

Couple of things. The circuit is 2.4km if you take the right lines ;) The ASBK riders are always positive about the technical challenges of the circuit.

Unfortunately when it's your only circuit it's not a joke, it's a big deal, and we enjoy racing there.

Unfortunately two of our fellow racers died this year, one as a result of the circuit design so we're hoping for some safety improvements. Works start in January and the indications are that the season will go ahead next year.

As you can imagine there's a lot of pissed off racers but everyone wants to get back to the circuit.

International grade built from scratch race circuits are very expensive. I have heard Eastern Creek cost between $15 to $75 mill Oz to build, never did get that clear, not including the supposed bloke who owned the farm next door who thought he had them over a barrel but overplayed what he wanted so they redesigned it shorter and we all lost out,the Oz Gp happened there twice and went back to the much more loved Phillip Island. Once built they get constantly complained about, noise, traffic. Maybe why Eastern Creek is built next to a Toxic Waste Depot

Ok 1.5 miles then. We were still doing miles last time I was there! I've been lucky enought to have ridden on some fantastic circuits in various countries and Wanneroo is a joke compared to all of them. I mean to say, Perth/WA being so isolated and with the wealth we HAD [thankyou colin] surely we could have had an internation standard circuit that maybe we could have some internation or even national events besides the superbikes that would help motorcycling in WA in general. As for the cost, I bet a day doesn't go by that Eastern Creek or Phillip Island isn't being used.

There both overbooked, has huge benefits for road safe as well as generating plenty of money for the economy.
There is such a demand there are at least 2 and probably more small private circuits ,they don't advertise, both were a surprise to me and I heard about another a couple of weeks back,
,that's not including Wakefield. Plus demand for others on the Central Coast of NSW and the South Coast

I rest my case! :D

Living down here I never get to the race meets so it really makes no difference to me whatever they do.
Has been talked about extending Collie but they've been talking about that for 8 years, last time I was there.
Too bad they can't bring back "round the houses" racing in some of the rural towns like they did back in the 70s.
They were great weekends of racing with a variety of tracks to compete on.
Hope they do sort out Wanneroo, an extra couple of kays wouldn't go astray either!!

What's your legal position in Oz re street circuits ? Here in NZ we've still got five going annually.
I've been involved in getting one up and running and while it's a lot of work it's very rewarding for the local economy.
The one I worked on is Methven, which is a ski town in winter and stone dead in summer.
Easter Saturday worked well both on the race calendar and for the town's accomodation providers.
Get the local service clubs on side - Lions or Rotary - and they do a lot of the work for you. Finding straw bales etc...

I dunno whether there's any specific legal position on street circuit racing. I think it's just that no government (state or federal) has the necessary gonads to let it happen because they're scared of any backlash in the event of carnage. Sadly, cowardice seems to be the motivating factor in most of Australia's government decisions these days. Another example is installation of hundreds of miles of roadside barriers, double white lines and lowering of speed limits to mind-numbingly slow. We're all going to die of boredom.

Some street racing still happens, like V8 car racing at Surfer's Paradise and Targa Tasmania, but nothing for bikes as far as I'm aware.

Nah that will never happen here again, after all someone might get hurt!
There are alot of small towns hurting and slowly dying that would benifit from some w/e events that bring in the punters and their cash.
Back when the round the houses racing were thriving the attendence were huge.

Did a course a couple of years ago as part of my navy duties, it was a civvy course on 'risk mitigation'. Thought it would be about identifying and minimising risk. Wrong, it was all about covering your arse against litigation!

The last street racing in NSW was a round the houses event held in Wollongong maybe 10 years ago,to my shame I didn't go and it died after 2 years I think. The Cops used to govern this via something called The Speedway Act bought in many years ago to protect the viewing public. These days all it would be would be a mass calling out for HOON behaviour. They have the Incredible death toll on the brain, even though not including statistical glitches its tending way down. The latest Incredible Insanity is the call for a ZERO deaths on the road policy.
Only achievable if nobody does ANY traveling. Its a huge Industry with University Degrees Government Grants and all. Sure come up with real world solutions but it goes way beyond anything sensible these days and the General Public continues to just take it . In a day to 2 the pleading and begging to slow down will start for the holidays, same old same old. There will be deaths but the real reasons never get looked at.

I reckon the road toll has pretty much bottomed out. Today it's a fraction of what it was 30 years ago before drink driving/speed enforcement/seat belts.
In WA, just read that about 185 people died on the roads so far this year. I reckon that's pretty good yet the cops/goverment/news papers carry on about the carnage.
The idiot public swallow it and let the cops/gov increase fines/penalitys, more speed cameras. About time people started thinking for themselves and start reading between the lines instead of sucking up the propergander that the cops/gov deal out through the media. Now we have the public doing police work with their dash cam dobbing in other road users.
I now think twice about passing a car over double white lines safely on a bike as my number plate will be recorder on the stupid dash cam.
Once my house is finished I'll be planning on moving to Thailand were you can still ride like a hoon without big brother watching over. No more freedom left in this nanny country.
When I brought my property on the south coast we didn't have any cops in town, they came on Wednesdays, the day the bank opened. Now we have 2 permanent and another 2 come for the xmas/new year. The Motodd gets parked up and the GS BM comes out and it's all dirt back roads for the next couple of weeks.
Another reason we need a decent circuit so sport bike riders have somewhere to ride their bikes for what they're designed for.

Here is a stat that is well hidden,
2015 calender year in Australia-
Death by suicide--3000
Road deaths      --1209

Spend all the money on suicide prevention and save 3 times the lives.
Oh thats right, there is no revenue in suicide prevention.

Well put.  And bear in mind, some (significant) proportion of road deaths are also in fact suicides.  So that number is probably more like 3500/700 or even greater.  Wide open road straight into a tree, or veering into the path of an oncoming semi in a 100k zone, both happen fairly often and at least some of them are deliberate, however never get spoken about.  Ditto heath emergencies while driving, old codger has a heart attack while trundling along in a 60k zone, grinds to a halt without hurting anyone else and dies in the car - that is part of the "road toll".

Agree with all that has been said re policing of the dreaded speed...The cops here are just as bad.

Short story....Some years back i was acting as Clerk of the Course at the Wyndham street race - part of the Burt Munro meeting. Turn one was a fuckup with a truck parked outside it by locals as a viewing platform. Nothing we could do about it as the key had "vanished"...Anyway, the marshals at that corner let a (female) photographer in to take some close ups. She had to scramble when a bike hit the bales. It was seen by the local Constable who immediately called on the marshals to revise the corner layout, stopping the meeting to try and get it done.
I had to go to the scene and argue with him that the layout had been approved by persons much higher up the pay scale than he or I - and if someone got hurt as a result of any changes it would be his head on the block.
We eventually agreed that if someone was hurt or killed on that corner I was to go immediately to jail....

Six months later the papers for the new CoC qualification came out from MNZ. Once I'd seen them I asked the Roadrace Commissioner where was the question "how do you stop the local cop from shutting down your meeting?" He claimed it was an oversight, laughing all the way...He'd been there and seen it happen. Bastard.

Or proper old school just a set of leathers Like Peter Davies.
