Transmission selector forks sf

Ok the selector forks fit into their blank spaces in-between slotted rings. Now does the 1st fork by the clutch go into the layshaft behind? In the manual it shows that fork back and the others forward. Then the 5th gear fork looks like it goes into the lock collar. No? Ok then what position or positions is the shifter drum supposed to be going through as you set it up?

Did you take the forks completely off the shaft? Once you mix them up it can be a tad confusing, but really, it's not rocket science ... two of the forks have the 'pin' that goes into the selector drum slot facing one way, and the other has it facing the other - take that as your starting point, then look at the size of the slots (OD that is); I think two are smaller than the 3rd? If you've got your bottom case in place, just look at the main and layshafts, have a guess what goes where, and then do a dummy fit.

Whatever you do, once you are reassembling, DON'T forget the pin that prevents the selector fork shaft from sliding left into the back of the clutch drum. And DON'T let the pin fall out while you're not looking - seen cases jammed up when the studs are tightened, with the pin wedged nicely under or over one of the gearbox bearings.  :o :o :o
 
The left and middle forks are the same. The right one is different.
If you arrange them that way, it'll be obvious which one goes where.

If only I had taken a pic. Fig 37 in the manual I thought would point it out but it does not.
Looks like 1st selector fork goes in between the 2 gears close to clutch that do not separate on the main shaft. Or does this one go on the groove on the layshaft not the main shaft. Manual has this 1st fork leaning that direction.
2nd fork into groove in-between 2nd and 3rd.
And then 3rd fork would have to go inside the lock collar. It looks like this is the only place it can go.

2nd fork looks like it has to go in the groove in-between 2 & 3rd gears.
Then 3rd fork looks like it has to go in the lock collar. I don't see where else.
Big question is does the 1st fork go on the trans mainshaft or does it go on the layshaft? It leans back in the manual pics.
Or do all 3 forks fit into the trans mainshaft.
 
I never bothered to remember, because it'll be obvious.
I'd say you can't do it wrong.

No, there is one collar on the layshaft, 2 on the mainshaft.

"While you're at it": renew spring #33  from the diagram.
It's at least 45 years old. Good opportunity now, might
save you from a lot of work one day..
 
with everything laying in the bottom case, you should cycle the gears several times to be sure everything is hunky dory, there is a factory tool to make this easier on the twins, it fits over the gear teeth of the selector drum spindle/shaft, oddly this tool does not fit the triples but it looks like it should.Not a vital bit of kit improvisation can be your best friend. Mine is out on loan at them moment so I am unable to photograph it.

No problem operating it with pliers.
Finally found a photo. Left fork goes into the
layshaft collar. Middle one goes into mainshaft collar, as
soon as the pin is in the slot.

Of course it fits, Clem.  Same design of selectors, same dimensions.

well on the triples that I have tried it on, the crankcase casting around the gear prevents it dropping over the teeth.
Normally I would be able to take a picture and show what I mean, as there is an engine on the bench that would be suitable, but the key is on loan to a 750 owner who has fourth gear bush disintegrating problems, so I cant.

Press out the toggle, chuck in the lathe and skim off a coupla'thou.  Easy as...

The tool fouls a little on some triple cases.  Guess the foundry misjudged wall thickness here and there.
