Triple Headers

Is or should there be a difference between #1 & #3 headers?

The set on my (180) Mirage seem to be interchangeable regardless of the part numbers stamped into them: is this correct. If so what do the different part numbers refer to?

041 = left (#1)
042 = middle (#2)
040 = right (#3)

Left and right are 'handed' and this is visible to the eye.
Centre is straight as you look down it' length.

Fitting them out of sequence is possible but the fit is poor (the headers don't meet the head square) and it places great strain on the whole system.

Hey Andy, the two outer headers are not interchangeable. To get the definitive answer, take the headers and collector off the bike then insert the headers into the collector and spread them apart so they are roughly the same distance apart as they would be on the bike. Use a straight edge, such as a level, and place it across the three header inlets, the straight edge should be flat across each inlet. There you go, clear as mud. ;)
Remember the distance between the centre and right headers is greater than the centre/left ones due the the cam chain tunnel.

Yep, additionally if the collector box isn't aligned properly you'll have a devil of a time trying to get the mufflers to sit evenly.
I centre mine by measuring the distance between the collector and the centre-stand mounting brackets. Works for me ;)

Actually depends on the system as the original and Malcolms pipes to that matter as set slightly to the left of the bike.. that is the primary cover side as the right hand muffler spigot is slightly longer than the left one.. though a lot of repro units are made equal length's so that causes other issues.

G'day Brett, I was thinking about the standard collector and headers, wasn't aware that after market units might be different.

after market ones by monsieur Cox, "the short arsed shitter from Solihull" have that slightly to the left situation, because it was copied from two original and differing systems (both had same part numbers) and so is factory original spec, many people have made aftermarket systems, and some have copied each other, but in the main they are all wrong, if the silencer inlet spigots are the same, then they are not 1000% correct and your tail pipes may look offset of even out of level, and you may find the RHS front pipe clashing with the frame tube.
