Two Laverda triples barn find in Tasmania

Well, not really a barn find. I suppose. A few of us in Tassie have known that these triples were rotting away in a shed for years, but the owner thought they were worth their weight in gold and wouldn't sell for less than $50k

He must have recently come to his senses or realised he was never going to get his pot of gold and let them go for a sensible price. A mate of mine bought the pair for $15k, plus a bunch of spare parts.

There's a 1980 Jota and a 1974 3C. The Jota hasn't been running since the early 90's and the 3C since the early 80's. They're both quite original apart from re-upholstered seats and modified rear footrests for the wife's comfort. All mods appear to be reversible.

The Jota appears to be in reasonable condition, with some patina. A bit of a clean-up and re-commission, and a new set of tyres and it should be OK to ride. But the new owner wants to give it a thorough check over before attempting to start it. It's apparently been pranged at some stage because it has an un-numbered frame. The original frame came with the bike but it has a hump in the spine tube indicating a front-end crash at some stage. It's not a severe bend so I reckon the original frame is recoverable.

The 3C is a bit more of a project. It too has had a front end crash and has subsequently been parked with no attempt to repair it. The forks are bent and I'd guess the frame is too. A few bits are missing (possibly been robbed to keep the Jota going) and some other parts are broken. But it's 90% complete. This one was stored in a damp lean-to and has a bit of rust on the steel bits and white oxide on the alloy. If the engine internals are OK it's a potential resto project, but it'll need a fair bit of money spent on it to get it back on the road.

Eeeeee…..
I wish people would sell this stuff sooner, and save the buyer a heap of work. Not just Laverdas, but cars, houses, anything!
$15k still seems a little high to me, thinking about all the hours and elbow grease, and my elbows aren’t getting any younger…

That 3c needs the Whitbread Brewery No4 200year old Bolton and Watt Beam engine job I once did, a nice big tank and 44-gallon drums of WD40 to soak in for a few months.

1980 fairing at the least, rare model the 1980, mean actually rare unlike the "rare" 1981.... not like i know the market that well. $15k for the 1980 alone i would have guessed.... man the 3c needs a few bits and dedicated restorerer..... nice find all the same...j

A bloke here in Prossy has a 1980 Jota like that.
He has owned it from new but it has been parked in his shed for well over 10 years. He reckons he parked it because he couldn't get a replacement for his leaking exhaust collector and just sort of left it (I reckon it's been sitting longer than he thinks). He had toyed with selling it recently but he thinks it is worth $30,000 if he can clean it up and get it going. I have seen it and unfortunately it is sitting in his shed that has had water through it from cyclones and has significant surface rust and oxidation. Told him to let me know if he wants to sell and I'd make him an offer but I think he wants to get it going again one day (I have said I'd help him) Nothing will probably happen unless he needs some money sometime. Have also discussed with him what might need doing so will see. It is pretty original including that fairing (which creates polar opinion). I reckon $5,000 to $7,000 would be worth a punt, but would need to have a better look including pulling cam cover and plugs and having a squizz down the bores.
Who knows............

I do not have that many 80 models on our Aussie register, unlike the 81's
Be interesting to know the engine numbers

Know of only 18 x 1980 as opposed to 66 x 81 Jota's/3CL's in Aussie

Bloke should have advertised them somewhere, $15k seems pretty reasonable to me based on current AU pricing. Rumour has it an 80 Jota recently sold for $40k, obviously not one like that mind you.
A shame about the condition, especially the 3C. A litre of diesel sprayed over them every few years would have been $10 well spent. :(

Fully restored to better then new condition, $42k, with warranty

$15K for two triples is a good price as far as I am concerned, 80 Jota does not look too bad and the 3C can be recovered

Eight and half grand GBP, so if the Jota can be fixed up for 2-3k the new owner has probably not done too bad a deal. He can then afford to just give the 3C away and let someone else spend all their money on it.

Jota fixed for 2 to 3 thousand? Only if you don't touch the engine.
But then, I suppose that the bores are ok, there's some toilet paper up the exhaust.

That's right Paul. If it's a complete strip and rebuild and you're paying someone else to do the work then it could easily become a vanity/insanity project....
However, if it keeps another Laverda running and the owner is happy to part with his cash then who are we to question their judgment?

Not I, I swear.
Even if we're vaguely competent, we're paying some one else to do the rebore and crank. That's £2000 before you've even got the polish out.
