I don't bother trying to use spoons to dismount tires. I use an Exacto-knife, Clamps to break the Bead and a die grinder with a metal rotary disc to cut the 1/4" steel braid wire. We have a tendency to run our tires until they are Rock Hard - LOL. Clean, Scrape the Spoke Nuts and Polish the Inner Rim using Lacquer Thinner and Scotch-Brite. Rust-Check Oil the Spoke Nuts and dab some water proof grease over them and install the Inner-Tube/Spoke Nut Protector Ribbon. Depending on the condition of the rim it takes at least 2 Days to prepare a Good Borrani Rim for mounting Rubber and considerably longer if you polisher her up, sand and paint the spokes.
To mount the tire I place a blanket on the ground and acquire the aid of a friend. It takes about 20 minutes with some cooperative ingenuity using a Spoon (My Design), long Screw Drivers and Leather to protect the rim to mount the tire.
Bike shops in my area charge $100 just to mount and they always scratch the rim, Big Time. Rather then go through that experience again, I choose to do it myself.
It's that time of the year -Huh! - I'm in the process of mounting a Bridgestone BT on the rear. Got the Rim super clean and polished - Just waiting for the Weather to Warm up - Come on May ;o)
Side Note: Always tickle your Spokes with a metal rod wrapped in rubber - That is something that you can feel Tension and make them Sing. Fix whatever you find. Yah! The Short Thick SF Drum Spokes are really Low Keyed. I'm 51 Years with the original Rims and Spokes = TLC Maintenance. I use a Dial Indicator mounted on the Swig Arm to check rim run out and square mounting.
