Tyres

Rob,

"V" is the speed index rating, over 210km/h in this case. "56" is load index.

Unless you're taking the bike to the track, the 90 profile works better imho for general road tootling.

One of my customers found something we weren't expecting when he changed to the Conti Race Attacks on a 350 Aermacchi.
The bike had always had a slight front end patter with every tire he tried. The last ones fitted were soft Avons bought from leftovers
after Schwantz had used one of Ken McIntosh's Nortons for a tyre test session.
With the Contis fitted -no patter. Presumably a carcase construction difference.

Mike Sinclair has been telling me that he's sure current race slicks have some form of carcase damping built into them now.
Nice if it's filtered down to our level.

Hi Piet, the SFC will be used on the track. can't be bothered taxing it for the roads.
So for that purpose would 80s be better?. Being track use they'll be run with lower psi.

The flatter profile of the 80s will allow greater lean angles while affording a larger contact patch than the 90s. Go for a 110/80 at the front in that case, the 100/80 is a bit puny.

Thanks Piet
I'll take your advise and go with the 110/80 and 120/80.
I'll need to buy some tyre levers and refresh myself with changing tyres.
Haven't changed a tyre by hand since the 70s!!

And rim protectors
Hi Rob, For track work I'd go for ContiRoadAttack 3 CR rather then BT46. if they do the sizes you require. I used a CR2 on the front of my road bike now for a while and the first impression was a tyre that felt connected to the road. Transformed the front end of my 1200 Mirage.
Would I race on them - Yes. I don't use them on my endurance racer because when I looked into them their 150 section tyre had only been test to H level - 130mph.
If you can fit a 150 section rear section then I can highly recommend Bridgestone CR11's.

Remember tyre pressure for track work should be based on when the tyre is hot and not adjusted when cold.

Andy

Hi Andy,
My SFC has standard borrani rims so tyre size is limited. I do have a 3.5" rear astralite that I could fit though.
Also have a complete rear hub from a GS suzuki that needs a 3"ally rim fitted.
I'll see whats available in the Conti CRs. At the end of the day it's my original SFC so I won't be riding flat out.
Just want to start riding it again and enjoy it for what it is. I have the Motodd that I don't mind pushing hard.
I usually start the track day with tyre pressure at 27/28psi cold. After a 15min session and back in the pits they usually read ~31/32.
At those pressures the bike feel nicely planted.
Motodd running Dunlop Road Smart 4, 150 rear 110 front. I find them to be good tyres on the track

Modern cross-plys don't have much in common with the tyres of 40 years ago, except maybe shape and colour. ;) The Bridgestone BT45/46 are a prime example, their sidewalls are almost as soft and pliable as those of a radial tyre, which is probably the reason why they are such an excellent all-rounder. Add a modern rubber compound for the tread and there's not much more to wish for.

Took the 3C to a track day last year with a BT45 fitted to the front (very short notice, no time to fit a more suitable tyre). Tyre took it in its' stride without issue. Could not have asked for more...

Just cos it sez "R", doesn't necessarily mean it's any better.

Are you doing grass speedway Piet?

Rob I think the CR Contis come in 130 or 150 rear, too big for you rear rim. As suggested go for 110 front and 120 rear. If you can get Avon AM22/23 classic race type you will be fine but not sure if they come in 120 either. Probably any good road tyre will also be fine in the warm WA sunshine at track pressures, remember that they used to race all the proddies on standard road tyres back in the day. The SFC will take some adapting to after the Motodd. should be interesting.

Hey Rob,

Bloody good tyre the bt46 👍
56 is load index rating (224 kegs)
V = speed index (240k +)
90 aspect works well with our ole dunga’s makes them a little quicker to turn in……..like razor blades🤣🤣 just don’t get stuck in the tram tracks, or you’ll end up in the depot!
No probs with the 90 aspect…….. but I’m just tootling round 🤣😎

Looking on the site of Motorcycle Tyre Warehouse they don't have the Conti CRs. and no listing for the Avon AM classic race.
So BT46 it is then.
I'll be hooning the SFC inside my comfort zone so the 46s should be OK.

Differing opinions on size.
I've been told the /80 rear will lower the gear ratio so should use a 90.
Currently I have a 110/90 bt45 fitted up front and have always thought it too big.
Maybe in the /80 profile it'll appear smaller.
So currently thinking 120/90 rear
110/80 front.
Maybe quicken up the steering a little.
