Vacuum Gauges

Any oppinions on Davida Vacuum gauges ?
I have a set and used them once.  I set all three carbs the same and set the two outer slides to move exactly with respect to the centre one and all seems well.

One thing that bothers me is that when you fully open the throttle the slides don't fully clear the carb throat, any ideas anyone?

I seem to remember from another thread that somebody (Wolfgang? Haerter? don't remember) sells slightly shorter versions of the little cables that pull on the slides so they do open all the way. RS36s don't need this.

Either the carbs are set up crooked in the bracketry (unlikely), the WOT stop screw is set too early (likely) or the linkage shafts and their bushes are completely knackered (very likely).  If you can feel up and down play in the shafts they will definitely need inspecting.  Once all is put right, the slides will most likely clear the bores equally.

Always thought 998s go "clatter-clatter.." :D

Silly boy, that's just the clutchy thing!

Every other manufacturer would be caned for letting something like that loose on motorcycling mankind, only the Bolognese Bodgers seem to get away with something like that!  Can't they build a decent clutch??  Bevels' clutches busted, new ones clatter... poor engineering imho!

I bought a slotted cover for mine so that you can see the clutch spinning round and that makes it louder  8)

I'll get my coat....  :-[

Hi Cam,post up a reveiw when it turns up,heartly sick of the murcury gauges I have.Even after dunking the bottom 60mm including the resivour in paintable waterproofing membrain to seal them they still suck air.If I was happy guessing at a balance with all the bubbles I would just do it by ear,and my ear is crap

Is there an adjuster on them to get them equal before you put them on each cylinder?
Yes the adjuster is on the dial at 5 oclock just above the green section

Vince,

I have been using those exact same gauges that Cam has ordered, since 94 when I got them from M&P., They work fine , The nylon regulators need some fine adjustment to get the needles to just flutter slightly before they shut off all together and the rubber hose will probably perish after a few years , I replaced it with PU windscreen hose, couple of the lenses are missing but the guages can be adjusted easily, especially with the glasses missing  :)

I see they still spell them wrong !

Drikko: Yes, they have calibration and damping adjusters on each dial. I made sure of that before I bought them.

Vince: OK, I'll let you know whether they're any good.

I've been synching carbs for years by various other methods (by ear, eye or slide measurement). It's easy on twin cylinder bikes, but gets harder as the cylinder count goes up. Vacuum gauges seem to be  cheaper now than they've ever been so I thought I may as well get myself a set, especially as I'm doing work on other people's bikes.

Cheers,
Cam

Bought my set of dial gauges when they cost about twelve quid and till work fine, as Rob says expect to change the pipes every few years'

Maitland.

Rob, you must have got a good set. I bought the same ones in '92 and they were complete junk, never worked worth s...
Sold them on and invested in a set of Boehm's, never regretted the investment :D
