Vacuum Gauges

I am after a new set of Vacuum Gauges,my Mercury ones are full of bubbles,I expect there going to be the metal rod type.Any recommendations as to what works best.

If your mercury gauge is otherwise in good condition, you can get the bubbles out by lightly tapping, repeatedly.

Tried that, there is an air leak in the plastic to hose connection deep in the guts.I also tried painting the whole base bit with a paintable waterproof membrane, bathroom sealer.Hoped that woulld work, nope.Time to replace

Its leaking from the hard plastic sight tubes where there molded into the plastic base, the leak is at the joint buried deep in the bowels. The bubbles are tiny and throughly dispersed in the tubes. Its usable but from my water level experience probably pretty inaccurate.

Fair enough. You'd probably find gauges easier to use anyway. I have the dial-type vacuum gauges which are OK, but folks on here seem to prefer the metal rod (Carbtune) type. I've never used one so I can't comment.

If you're chucking the mercury thing in the bin, you'll need to drain the mercury out of it for proper disposal. You don't want that shit getting into the environment. You may be able to sell the mercury to a metal recycler unless you can find someone who wants it. I dunno who would have a need for it nowadays though, maybe a university lab? Mercury manometers used to be common in days gone by, but are pretty rare now because of the environmental aspect, not to mention the difficulty carting the bloody things around. You could put it in a bottle and keep it on the mantelpiece  :D

As Davo recommends Carbtune do an excellent gauge that uses rods instead of mercury accurate easy to use cheap ........
Used them for years

Vince you can have mine if we can work out how to send the mercury with it. I bought these about 6 or 7 years ago when I bought my Laverda so they've only been used once or twice before I went to Mikunis. It's a Motion Pro from memory.

Thanks for the offer, transporting these is far from easy, posting it and having a leak would end with both of us in clink

No worries, I'll give them to the local bike shop. Ducati bevels don't need them.

Before you spend your hard earned on another might be worth trying the method outlined here to remove the air bubbles.
