Valve stem seals etc...

Seems that your problems were due more to worn guides than lack of seals...Cheers, Cam

Hi Cam, in the case of my picture - yes I agree, as I wrote "guide wear mess". Still think seals are bneficial though, simply because they do not truly seal. but just help control excess flow. I have no proof, but we know our 3C head designs give high draw at the exahaust guide and a seal can help moderate flow, I think. Paul.

As a matter of interest how many miles have been done on these engines using seals on the exhaust valve guides that didn`t have them fitted originally

  Hi Tetly,

Done about 90,000 kilometers in my RGS with seals on the exhaust and there must be a dozen other heads out there that have been converted by me. Don't know if anyone else is doing it. Apart from the entire automotive industry of course.  ;)
Some outfits show a novel aproach to stem seals, fitting them at 20 degrees to the valve stem..........

The triples tend to blow oil on the overrun, even if the ex guides are well within spec.

The chamfer mentioned by Keith is far too large, allowing loads of oil to gather and consequently be sucked out through the exhaust.  Simple remedy is to reduce the chamfer by cutting back the top of the guide by 0.7mm, leaving only about 0.3mm chamfer instead of the stock 1.0mm!

I've also fitted seals to the exhaust valves, both on the 3C and the 750 GTL.  Have also converted many heads, twins and triples, to ex seals.  The 500s had them as standard, as do the Zanes....

I agree with Piet - when i had guides made - the exhaust ones had virtually no chamfer at the top - can't see any problem with fitting seals to exhaust guides either - regards - Phil

Or, just in case Ray's boil in the bag thriftiness doesn't work, spend a tenner or whatever on three seals and save yourself having to repeat the two hour ball-ache of cam removal .  :D :D :D

Ray - I think it costs more than a tenner to boil a pan of water thse days!  :o
