Voltage Regulator Placement

Hi Gentlemen,

I am installing the 3 phase Regulator supplied by Red in his Sachse/Redax system.  The instructions suggest installing the regulator on the rear mudguard, below the tool tray.  My 74 3C does not have too much room there.  The regulator rubs on either the tool try or the battery tray.  As I was looking around for another spot, I was able to install it on the transverse frame bracket that the rear mudguard bolts to (yes, the bolt holes match up to the regulator slotted holes).  I installed the seat and there is clearance....but not too much.  The fins at the rear of the regulator (highest point) have about 1/8 inch clearance to the seat pan.  Is this too little?  How much heat does the regulator throw off...or better yet, how much air space does it need to stay cool?

If this location is no good, I noticed I have a bunch of room in the battery tray area.  Has anyone tried making a bracket and mounting the regulator below the start relay? (Using standard air box set up, but still have lots of room).

Finally, I have seen in some pictures the regulator is mounted in the tool tray next to the ignition module.  Again, I questioned this location because of the heat from the regulator.  Does anyone have any experience or suggestions about this location.

Any input would be great.....

Thanks for all your help,

Keith

If it's of any use I struggled to find a suitable mounting point on my Jarama. Eventually drilled a couple of holes in the R hand battery support frame thing and bolted the RR on the inside the upright doodah. It's close to the block connector under the rear of the tank and not too far away from the fuse box on the other side of the battery tray. There is also a very handy earth point on the rear mudguard really close. I think it gets a good cooling blast of air from behind the side panel, been there a couple of years with no problems. Hope this helps. Stuart

Stuart,

Thanks for the reply.  I don't really like it's placement under the seat (no cooling air).  And there is so much room in the battery tray area..I think I may take you
up on your suggestion.  I did think about mounting it outside the RH battery support, but no room under the side panel, so inside it will go.

Your reply does help,

Keith
