Voltage Regulator Sf Gt

The voltage regulator on sf & gt have grommets over brass bushings that screws to the frame. One side grounds a wire from the reg. Are the grommets for vibration? Or do you have to keep the regulator housing from grounding? My grommets have chystalized and are breaking up. Have to replace & improvise & want to make sure I do not fry the system!

The grommets will be just anti vibration and they do get hard over time, some replacement regs don't have these. The rubber strap the regulator sits on (at least on later models) is very important to save the reg form vibration. The earth lead from the reg is connected to the body of the regulator, so it makes no difference if the reg body touches anything it, most important is that is well earthed.

If your regulator is rigidly mounted, it tends not to regulate any more and blows up the battery.
You'll see a few original 750s with acid runs on frame and silencers.

Replace the strap with some leather.
Otherwise it will not live long.
