No, it's a DMC II ignition system manufactured by Moto Witt. It produces a wasted spark.

Hello Piet
thanks for quick reply, you start by saying ”no” then end it “produces a wasted spark”
have taken of barrels and dont know if piston 1 is on the ignition stroke
if wasted then ok, if not need to re-time

Richard

If spark is cam position controlled then ignition is compression stroke sensitive. If ignition is crank switched it's "wasted spark".
Depends...

DMC I and II systems for 750s also run a wasted spark. The recent DMC 32 can be ordered without, means 2 single coils MUST be used. Waste spark system can run a single double coil.

Another picture, same ignition control unit
Sorry should have said, on a Jota
so ….. is it wasted spark

thanks….

When you refer to a wasted spark the rotor on the crankshaft will send a signal to the module every time it spins past the trigger, in the case of your 180 deg triple this will mean the double coil that fires the number 1 and 3 spark plug will spark this means when number 1 is on the compression stroke it will fire and at the same time the number 3 spark plug will also spark (not on the compression stroke) this is what is refered to as a wasted spark.

Indeed, Piet, but Richard has a Triple. My answer referred to his bike.
I am aware of that, but it was indeed you that referred to cam-driven systems. ;) Just pointing out the differences/possibilities.

Maurice, to put it simpler, it sparks at every revolution, the "wasted" spark occurring durung valve overlap. Without compression, therefore not doing anything to influence the engine, other than using up electricity.

Thanks for that, it is what I was hoping for.
Bike was running well when I to apart to replace base and head gasket so no need to worry about re-timing

It must be a terrible thing being a wasted spark-just think, you begin your life as the result of a bit of excitement generated between a magnet and a coil, travel all the way down the HT lead and burst into the cylinder all full of excitement only to find there`s bugger all happening when you get there , party over.
A bit like Michael Collins travelling all the way to the Moon in Apollo 11 and then finding he`s not allowed to do anything when he arrives.
