weird clutch issue

Hey All
so my 74 SF2 is have an unusual clutch problem that's happened twice now -  both times after not riding it for 2-3 weeks (not sure if that has anything to do with it..). Anyway when i get on it there is noticeable slack in the cable, that wasn't there before,  and as i move along it becomes more and more  difficult to select gears, getting neutral is impossible  - i'll  tighten the cable adjuster up at the handle bars up until all the slack it out and its fine afterwards - at least in the short term.  It was about 4 months between the first and the second incident - and may miles, but the first time it occurred i hadn't ridden the bike for a spell too.  While i don't think its the cable, i've got a spare i'm goin to change out anyways - but wondered if anyone has suggestions of things i  should/could look at  ?
thx
Mike

Sounds like something is backing off, but as you say it's a weird one. I wouldn't be riding it until I got to the bottom of it though.

So there's slack in the cable.  You take that up and the bike runs fine.  It sits for a couple of weeks and the slack is back in the cable again?  That's nuts.
Do you have kids?  Crazy ex-wives?  I recall someone on this forum invoking "fuck up fairies" for a problem my triple was having.

Can't wait to hear what the answer to this one is.

I had a growing slack problem on my 3C clutch cable.  Was caused by wear on small metal wheel on which the cable arm, in the gearbox cover, pivots.  The wheel (nr 26) is shown in the attached PDF, courtesy of Laverda Paradies.

Good call my money is on something seizing or slowly going to god... and that area makes a lot of sense as its hiding out of site and can get abused...

Could be something as simple as the locking nuts coming loose and spinning for the cable adjustment or the cable pulling outta the lead pellet in the lever. Ever had to use a Vise Grip on the clutch Cable to get you home ;o)

I fixed the Lead Pellet stretch issue by rounding a steel nut to fit the Lever and drilling hole for the cable through the nut then feathering the end in the nut hole and soldering the centre solid = No more Cable Stretch = 30 years with that Clutch Cable and still working.

After all Berganzie's have a heavy clutch pull when not moving but almost perfect when in motion - Lot's of stress on that cable - Time and Time again of use - Keep the cable lubricated.

About every 2 or 3 years: Hang the Cable, rinse with Paint Thinner and drip with Auto Transmission Fluid. Use Electrical Heat Shrink to repair any bruises in the Plastic wrap.

Yeh but it's a Laverda with Murphy the f' up fairies ( seems Murphy is gay ) at play so nothing is ever as simple as it seems.

yeah checked the cable and all the adjusters - it definitely ain't that -  guess i'll wait until next oil change (knowing how it pisses all over ), to  open the shifter/primary up and peek in the thing - unless of souse it does it again before hand - though does make me a little apprehensive to do any long trips on it

thx all!!
