Weird engine number?

Incorrectly quoted - no Laverda engine number matches that format.  The first triples - designated 1000 ran from 1001.  3Cs ran from 1230 to 3351* before changing to 3CL designation.

* give or take a rivet counter or two!  ;)

Need a photo.
Only thing I can think of is replacement crankcases were bought. Possible to buy them ex factory without numbers, to be stamped by dealer. And then someone stamped them that way.

A Photo would tell if the original number has been grinded away or if this potentially is a replacement case that the replacing dealer has stamped f.e. His names first letter plus month and year (5-1983) of when the replacement was done...

I think I recognise the number sounds like one that's been doing the rounds for a while. If it's red with a 1200 tank and side panels then it's a real bitsa. I last saw it at Stafford and it looked like the number had been ground off and another hand stamped on.
