Welsh roads switching to 20mph

Hopefully that's just in villages??!! If that's a blanket speed limit, god help us all. Bad enough that very open and beautiful riding roads in the ever-so-empty Australia are turning to 80kph limits. By the time it's all-electric I'd prefer to just hop in the Johnny Cabs and forget the fun part.

In my old age, I hope to be in the village pub sitting on a few 7oz glasses of beer and watching the world go by, slowly.

Lots of 40kmh speed limits in built up areas here have just now been reduced to 30. Fucking joke, I will have to restrain myself on the bicycle. In a car it is literally crawling, and it feels like you could stop in half a car length.

Hmm, maybe they’re onto something.

I watched a young girl get bowled over by a car (a gold HJ Holden, I recall it like it was yesterday) running a red light once, all wheels locked up.

Girl and the bicycle she was wheeling on the green man went flying like a rag doll.

Not a pleasant outcome

Probably only doing 50kph.
At 30 he may have stopped

The problems in towns is that transition is slow but ideally towns should be out of bounds to all forms of individual transport with well organised and free public transport.
So as a hopefully first step, towns will be limited to 30 km/h and out of bounds to all but electric powered vehicles. It's happening already.

Including 1000hp Teslas... with idiots at the helm?

Electrification isn't going to stop road deaths. Dead kid doesn't differentiate between a stinkin' diesel or a near-silent EV the size of a fuckin' barn.

It is replacing the 30mph limit in most built up areas. Not introducing additional restricted roads. Many of these roads, certainly at busier times you can't do 30 anyway due to traffic, junctions, crossings etc. Bristol has had 20mph limits for a few years. Laverdas are for the open road, not pootling through built up areas, though accepted, sometimes you need to go through them.

I just do not understand why in replacing ice cars with EV they felt the need to triple the hp! Sure they are heavier, but as you say does every car now need 800+ hp?

I live in a town ....... I guess in the future I`ll just be banned from riding a motorcycle ..... Or maybe I could just push it for about five miles until I reach a road I`m allowed to ride on ....... very clever ..........

As a PS ....... Roads in Wales which will be limited to 20 mph are those which currently subject to a 30 mph limit ...... residential location with lamp posts no more than 200 yards apart ( better get your measuring tape out ) .....

A similar 20 mph scheme was introduced throughout the City of Bristol a little while back ....... Of course it is completely ignored ( how ever did you guess that ? ) ....

As a point of interest , these 20 mph limits have been introduced in a country ( Wales ) which has a self governing assembly which is controlled by the Welsh Labour Party ........ the scheme in Bristol was introduced under the leadership of the City Mayor who is a member of the Labour Party ( The Green Party is actually the largest political party within the City ) ........ Scotland is due to introduce a similar 20 mph scheme , care of the Scottish Nationalists ........ And of course the Mayor of London ( guess which party , you won`t be wrong .... ok , it`s Labour ) is also planning to introduce 20 mph limits throughout Greater London , as the next step after his expansion of the ULEZ zone ........

The UK Government , aka England and Northern Ireland , ( and neither Labour , Welsh Labour , or Scottish Nationalist controlled ) , have no such plans to introduce a 20 mph limit to replace 30 mph ones ....... and have in fact labelled the introduction of these 20 mph limits as " insanity " ......

If you`re really paranoid ( and why wouldn`t you be ) ..... This all goes hand in hand with 15 minute neighbourhoods ..... ( You basically take a residential neighbourhood , cut off all access roads in and out of that neighbourhood , except for about two or three , thus encouraging ( forcing ) the residents to shop , and access local services within walking or cycling distance ...... thus eliminating private transport in that area , and eliminating vehicle pollution and all forms of road accident ( Vision Zero ) ........

This is all in order to improve the heath and welfare of the lucky residents , although what impact it may have on their mental well being is anyone`s guess ........ Not to mention the difficulty emergency response vehicles will have accessing these newly formed sustainable ghettos , now that most of the access roads have now been blocked off ....... And in addition , walking or cycling isn`t much use to the elderly or infirm , now that they can no longer use a car ..... but who cares about them .... They were part of the generation who are responsible for this fossil burning crisis we are now facing , so they can stay at home staring at the wallpaper as a punishment .......

Such a scheme is about to be " trialled " in the St George area of Bristol , overseen by guess who ( Yep , correct again ..... ) ......

And of course , the bigger picture is C40 Cities ........ current chairperson being one Lord Mayor of London , ( Never ! , who would have thought ..... ) ........ which is a combining of global cities ( Milan to New Delhi , Melbourne to New Orleans ..... you name it ..... ) ....

C40 Cities is basically an affirmation of all the Olympic standard garbage outlined above ...... plus , to encourage us toward a sustainable , net zero future , and to secure the health and well being of all us lucky people ...... all residents of a C40 city will be denied any form of private transport ( except a pushbike obviously ) , denied the choice of buying meat , and will be allowed to purchase no more than three items of clothing per year ..........

Be careful of what you wish for , Paul .........

WTH, how are you going to get your own personal vehicle from your garage to the open roads, will they provide motorcycle racks on the public transport vehicles

This is a ridiculous idea, Paul you have been watching too many reruns of Patrick McGoohans 'The Prisoner', maybe it's for you but not me.

Hmmm... that's the sad truth my friend. It's just as you have described it.

It will be a disaster, like the Labour Welsh Government generally, like Labour Sadiq in London with Ulez.Public transport isnt free.

They have had 20mph limits in Portsmouth for years, it sort of works, isn't heavily policed and the only people who really stick two fingers up to it are Arabs in big stupid Mercs with popping banging exhausts. I think the main point is it's accepted because it isn't heavily policed, if it was there would be trouble.

It's happened in a few places in Sydney CBD, delivery trucks leave early in the morning like Cobblers Elves apparently.

More and more city folk don't have personnal vehicles. If they need one, they rent one.
A lot don't have horses either.

Obviously, but as a first step, a lot of kids will be doing better at school since they won't be suffering from ENT and pulmonary affections due to the crap we breathe and so will be missing school less.
Health services will also benefit from not having to cope with avoidable pathologies.
