fork bottoms were a satin, chain guards and shock springs would be gloss, PJ1 makes a good satin paint and the best I have seen for satin fir forks and engines is KG industries 2400 series gun kote very tough stuff when applied correctly used to be called Kal Guard
Are we talking about your Laverda? If so, I don't reckon there is a "usual black" for those parts. Chain guard was originally chromed, as were the fork springs. Fork bottoms are polished alloy.
If you choose to paint them, then I'd suggest Satin. Mainly because gloss will end up loosing its lustre before long. It'll get grit blasted with road dust and/or chain grime, and after being cleaned with an oily rag a couple of times it'll look like satin anyway. So you may as well go with satin in the first place.
I have (red) painted fork bottoms on my Ducati and there's a heap of little stone chips in the paint. It's possibly one of the few parts on a bike that may be better off with powder coat than paint. I believe powder coat is a lot tougher than paint so it might be impervious to getting chipped.
But why black? Go for something different like purple.
Purple, who would do that. Ducking for cover. Bloody hippies. It's for the Pantah. Powder coating was thought of but marsking the oil seal area and any passages to the interior wouldn't be easy? I have had the fork lower Hard Anodised inside and out and that's not so attractive so its back to black. The chain guard has a black coating but its horribly textured.
Per my 77, Ceriani Jaramas have black satin fork lowers and chrome chain guards. I don't remember what color the shock springs were but I have them in a box somewhere and will report back.
We have a purple people eater in Oz as well. A mate years ago painted his GT Bevel pink and purple in swirls, phyodelic style as he was from that time. He loved pissing off the Bevel purists. Someone painted one white last year, I liked it. The rivot types were looking for there pitchforks.
For the forks on my Jota I had Crash supplies here in Adelaide mix me up a litre of 2pac satin black, striped the forks right back, sprayed a black etch, then 2Pac primer/filler, then final coat, and has been very durable. You should be able to find someone local to do the same.
