Where’s Piet

I recently ask Roger because I missed him too. Roger told me he is fine but has a lot of work at his home and maybe others as well.

He has been doing a big job on his house - I know the feeling very well, and we're not there yet. Scrounging an hour here or there to sort a few small teething issues on the 'Q'.

Probably busy digging his hole under his home bike lift deeper. Seeing is believing, it's brilliant. Bloody Historic homes, always need work.

To put it bluntly, I am pissed... by yet another forum member that has yet again picked my brain, wasted my time, energy and what more and then had the audacity to ask for even further advice. After 6 or 7 such cases in the past year or so, I've decided enough is enough. I'll get over it eventually, maybe.

I've also recognised that the first threads I check after logging in are the weekly jokes and Alzeros' travel thread, not at all Laverda-related. Seems my enthusiasm is waning. Lots of current technical inquiries leave me shaking my head in wonder, posted by people who'll never get on with these bikes no matter how much advice they get, a lost cause and a waste of time imho. Then there's the questions posed for the umpteenth time, a quick search would render multiple solutions without the need for others to repeat themselves over and over again, it's getting weary. Frankly, I do not suffer fools well. I don't know how I can contribute under these circumstances without becoming totally obnoxious, guess I'm not only getting old, but grumpy and cranky as well. I've never held back my opinions and beliefs, but for the moment, I prefer not to voice any at all.

I have thoroughly enjoyed being here amoungst loads of like-minded tragics and am extremely grateful for the advice and assistance I have recieved through the forum. Lots of great ideas have been tossed about, just as many not-so-great ones have been thrown out the window. The community is widespread but nevertheless close-knit, making this a very special place. I've found many friends here, I very much appreciate that.

Yes, I have been very busy with various home improvements, the most recent being the installation of a solar power supply with storage batteries (thanks Vlad, for pushing up energy prices). Historic buildings do not lend themselves well to this type of thing, unorthodox solutions abound and keep everybody involved on their toes. Getting the bike fleet ready for the season, including various TÜV inspections, has proved to be quite time consuming as well. Despite going into semi-retirement last October, I do not seem to have any more spare time than before!

Cosi, I've managed to wade off any Ducati advances... but there is a 450 Scrambler needing TLC on the horizon. ;)

It's actually quite flattering to realise that I've been missed, for that, my heartfelt thanks! Anybody wishing Laverda-related help/advice or just a chat can contact me via PM, for the time being I'll just drop off the radar screen.

I suspect that you're not the only one feeling that way. Competent people are going off radar more and more.
A lot of our beloved Laverda motorcycles are in the process of being finished off by people riding the wave of fashion, often with more money than brains.
As you write, a lot of information is available the other side of a keyboard but when you expect to have everything delivered with no effort, you piss people off. We now have self service hospitals and health staff 24/7.
Lovely sturdy machines that will give you back what you've put in to them. Put shit in, you get shit out.

Now where did I put your email? ;)

I’m about to embark on a large solar project, among other building work, so appreciate the physical and mental energy that takes out of you, so have no idea when I’ll get time for my various bike projects.
I was planning a visit to your part of the world in July Piet, to collect my 100 Sport engine from Wilfried, and had thought about a guided tour of OCT, but maybe a tour of the house might be more interesting. 🤔😜

I echo all the sentiments above Piet, I have been there as well, and am currently there with the ILOC forum, and me an honorary member and the only surviving continuos one for all its 49.45 years. No person alive or dead has that track record.

What I say is is this, there are no rules, common sense prevails above all things, do what makes you happy, if they dont like it Fuck'em
but you are still a hairy old bastard!
welcome here any time 24/7/365 only one hour from Dover.
come over for Baskers 2023, first weekend of September (book the hotel now, ask for room 40) plenty of us stay Thursday and Monday at a special rate.

It must be frustrating , when viewing some of the posts , especially in the technical section , to see that something on the equivalent level of ABC123 needs to be explained ........ Maybe a result of a " new " owner of a Laverda , coming from the relatively recent background of trouble free , dealer serviced bikes ......... The need to aquire basic knowledge , ( that was gained by servicing and maintaining bikes yourself , which most of us who started riding back in the `sixties and `seventies , would attend to without a second thought ) , has been negated .......... So when such a person is confronted with a motorcycle which needs more in the way of owner involvement ....................

Whether that is the fault of the person asking the questions may or not be the case ........... There could well be many Laverda owners , both old and new , who were hopeless regarding some aspects of maintenance forty years ago , and are still hopeless now ....... I was able to keep a triple on the road for many years with little in the way of outside help , but there are many aspects of engine servicing or rebuilding of which I would not have a clue , whereas many on this forum would be much more capable than me at addressing these issues .......

So the need for advice is always going to span the gulf between the basic and the more obscure ....... It may be possible to search for previous posts relating to your particular problem , but then it`s the posting of these " new" queries which , I reckon , helps keep the Forum alive and kicking .........
Some other Forums I visit are as dead as a dodo compared to this one ........... With those you can almost see the tumbleweed drift past the screen as you log on ......

So maybe pointless questions , as well as the excellent travel stories , ( and the joke and music sections , maybe useful for those who find it easier to tap away at a keyboard , than sling a leg over the twin / triple in their old age ) , maybe all this helps keep the Forum , together with all the serious stuff of course , something which people will keep coming back and contributing to ........

Keep at it Piet ..... as General Paton once said ........... " Things are never as good , or as bad , as they first seem ..... " .....

I am on an Ozzie forum that has a mix of age and experience, but one thing they do well is mentor new owners, where a dying breed and to stop motorcycling from becoming extinct we need to be welcoming to newbies. Nobody is born knowing how to check a plug is sparking and the days where Dad or big brother knew are also gone. Anyone with the slightest interest should be encouraged. Not everybody knows how to search a forum either. Maybe a big sticky at the top of the page might help. Thanking anyone who does offer advice helps with morale as well. I ask some obvious questions on occasion to get different opinions and pick the best info that suits me. I also try and concentrate info in searchable ways, if I don't get too lazy. I recon my Atlas thread and its more controversial brother about adjusting suspension is probably second only in rare data to the Atlas Owners Forum which BTW only reappeared because Atlas owners HERE agitated to get it to reappear on the web. There is Laverda lived experience here so I hope it doesn't also become extinct. Crank old cunts included.

Quite agree ........... Anyone who pops up on this Forum , for whatever the reason , should be encouraged .......... It shows they have an interest in Laverdas , which can only be a good thing ...... and surely having an interest in Laverdas is what this Forum is supposed to be all about in the first place .... ? ........

There are enough stories about newcomers , whether attending a club meet , or registering on a Forum , who are made to feel unwelcome ......... either because they perceive the existence of a " clique" , of which they feel to be excluded .......... Or perhaps are reluctant to ask for advice , in case they are ridiculed for being unknowledgeable .............

If everyone was so clued up on matters technical , that the only enquires would be one every few weeks , about the wear limit on exhaust valve guide bores for a `56 100 Sport Lusso or whatever , then the Technical Section would eventually die on it`s feet , which would be of benefit to no-one .................. 😟 ..... .......

BTW ..... Regarding making newcomers feel welcome ......... Ever walked past a club stand at a show , where the club members manning the stand just sit around in chairs , staring into space , making no effort to interact with anyone ............ Or even worse , stand around in a group chatting amongst themselves , ignoring anyone who may have an interest in what the club may have to offer ... ? ....... Always worth a smile when you witness this .........

I just remembered my first bike club interaction. The biggest club in Sydney in the 1970s was Willoughby District Motorcycle Club, Willoughby is your typical middle-class Sydney suburb probably a bit more Gentrafyed these days and even back then not where you might think a powerhouse of Motorcycling community would exist. They started both the Castrol 6hour Production race and Mr Motocross, world-class race series. They held a meeting at an Anzac club near me so I went one night. Huge crowd, probably a couple of hundred people. Pretty interesting for a while but it went on for hours, and then question time arrived and that devolved into a mass masturbation session with people wanting to buy featherbed frames for their Norvin project and every other interaction of your imagination you could dream up. At the end you could line up and join, so I tried. After an hour of waiting in the queue and lessening to more wanking on about impossibly high-faulting stuff people were looking to acquire I just left. It was not for my pimply 16-year-old arse that at that time occupied an MT125 Honda 2-stroke trail bike. I had no idea what the difference was between a narrow or wide Featherbed was or for that point what a Norvin was either.
