I am 100% English and grieved deeply upon hearing the news that Vera Lyn had died, affected me badly.

don't make inappropriate jokes on this one please, my uncle was a Nazi prisoner for five full years, and had very limited contact with the outside world whilst in captivity, but on rare occasions a recording of Vera Lyn would be played or heard.

In the twenty years that he survived after the war, he would become very emotional if she was seen on TV or heard on radio, and on some occasions, he  even left the room. This was a hard man, who survived his five years, and when being dropped off from a lorry, in his home town (one of two men) after the end of hostilities, witnessed the death of the other, by a motor vehicle in the street, his NCO in charge told him to go direct to the mans house and inform his parents, the truck then left, he was on his own. he didn't take a single day off in those twenty years, and I mean 7 days per week working, with 4am starts (milk farm) nor did he have a holiday , nor did he treat or buy himself things, he wore only military clothing, he never allowed himself female friendship, I once saw him stop a brawl in the street outside a pub at lunchtime, he belted the two men's heads together, which drew blood, and shouted at them, "how dare you behave like this in public, and in front of a lad, go to the woods and finish it"

there is more

but please with the greatest of respect for DAME Vera Lyn at all times
