Wiring help

I live in Perth Australia and have just imported a 1976 3CL from the UK, although the bike was originally registered in Germany. The VIN number is 3995. All good so far but I have a question. There is a tube that appears to be wired into the ignition circuit. Can anyone tell me what this is for?

Hopefully I've managed to attach a couple of pictures.

Mike, looks like your bike has the original CDI (HKZ) ignition system. That tube is the kill relay. Remove it and you have to stall the bike to kill the engine. It's a requirement of the CDI system.
HTH.

Grant is right.
From experience I'd junk the ignition system and get one of Red's (REDAX5) Sasche systems with the new 320W generator.  There will be those who disagree, but I'd bet none of them live in AUS with our wildlife.
Best thing you can do for a 3CL.

Wonderful bike IMHO.

There are 3 factory variants of that "kill" relay,  one variant open circuited the exciter coil,  which if lucky,  arced internally from unloaded induced voltage and burned out the coil.  The next variant shorted out the exciter coil and another variant shorted out the VR pickups....  :o

The Italians really did give us value for money,  3 for the price of one...  BTW most dead HKZ issues are dislodged terminal to winding wire termination on the outside of the excitier coil,  easy repair for the moderately gifted.  HTH John

Hi Mike good to see another aussie is drawing Laverdas to Australia, show us some more pics there are a couple of other Aussies on this forum in the Perth area maybe a bit further south, I have a 3C with a full Redax Sachse ignition/Alternator upgrade as I use my bike and if you are unaware of these early 3CL alternators you will soon learn that the output is extremely weak and any use where the revs are low your battery will barely charge and if the lights are on well I am sure you can work that out.
Great bike you have.

Hi Maurice,

Don't get me wrong - the Redax Sachse ignition/Alternator is a fantastic upgrade, but if you are short of cash (like me  ::) ), a decent battery will keep you going for a long distance. 130 watts will power your front and rear lights (but won't have anything left for the battery charging). Fit a large battery and you are good to go. I have recently gone back to the golf cart batteries I used back in the days.....33AH and spin the motor well.  A decent solution, if you are on a budget, as the battery only costs ?55 (Yuasa Yu-Power YPC33-12, 12v 33 Ah Deep Cycle Golf Trolley Battery). Fits the tray perfectly.

HTH

Here's a couple of pictures of the bike. I am planning use it as an everyday bike so I've already sent Red an enquiry about his alternator/ignition upgrade.

You'll see there is no airbox on the bike, the carbs just have mesh trumpets. I was thinking of adding some Koni air filters - any advice about this plan? Or am I better off trying to get an airbox somewhere?

Hi, where abouts in Perth are you hiding. I'm out in the SE.

I had K&N cones on the standard Dels, Red supplied the filters to go with the Miks. If you are going to use the 3CL as a day ride the Redax/Sasche upgrade is a must unless you like jumper leads or jump starts, and I say this from sad experience

Just got back in from a quiet run through the hills with a stop for lunch at the Parkerville Pub. Great day for riding as testified by the number of bikes on the road.

Hi Mke your bike looks great if it goes as well as it looks you have won, wolfgang will probably have an original airbox not the be all but fills that cavity behind the side panels nicely.

Whoops brain fade -meant K&N's for the carbs - not shock absorbers!!

Actually should stop saying I live in Perth 'cause I live in Freo  :) much better....

Need to set the carbs up, as when I took the bike for its first run it seems to be running very rich. I expect doing that will be a drama.

Mike

Yep, Mario has all the gear to set the dels up correctly. Good coffee and food in Freo but it is an hours ride before you get to anywhere decent to go riding. Shit all choice for food and coffee out here but 2 minutes gets me out into the hills.

Don't know who you hang with but either the Guzziwa mob or Ducati boys at DOCWA  organise good events if you are into making the owners of other Italian marques feel inferior
