Wiring Loom, Please HELP

Hi there

I am busy doing the wiring loom for my bike. Basically starting from scratch... I am using Honda VFR switch gear and the Honda VFR starter relay.

I have done almost everything (standard way, not using a bunch of relays). I have not wire up the indicators, horn, brake switches and neutral switch... I wanted to test if the bike will start but nothing happens to the s/relay. If I take the wire from the starter push button directly to the batter the s/relay kicks in like it should. Its like there is not enough power from the starter push button to kick the relay over...

Is it because the loom is not complete yet?? How can I test something?  I think there is only about 2 Volts over the kill switch. Is this right or am I doing something wrong?

Please help..Thanks  :P

Hi Scorch

It's your wiring so that makes you the expert on it  :). All I can add is I'm running Suzuki switch gear without relays and without problems .
Orange and black up to the kill switch, Orange/white linking the kill switch to the starter switch on mine.
Have you checked both switches for resistance and continuity. Are you getting 12 volts up to the kill switch ? Whats happenening to it after that?
I guess you have a multiplug somewhere around the handlebars with all the wires labeled or at least written down what they do?

generally relays have 4 wires
battery
starter
earth
12v key on

i've no clue what the VFR connections are but the switch button makes the small coil inside the relay energize
(completes a circuit between 12v and earth creating a magnetic field) pulling down the internal switch to connect batt to starter

check your switch button to see if it is powered 12v or earthed when pushed. the other terminal will then be earth or 12v
as the relays can generally be wired either way.

First question is - are you using a standard regulator/ignition system or have you modified it?

For a bit of simplified electrical info I used this site. I found it simplified the whole process immeasurably.

Hi Rob/JotaCorsa

I think I've got all the switch gear right and I am using a diagram from the Honda manual. So its all ok. (still cant figure out where the earth cable is on the LH switch for the horn...)

Anyway,  if I put a multimeter across  (+) Bat and to the point where all the wires from the coils and CDI boxes comes together, it reads 10,5V.

If I put a multimeter across  (-) Bat and to the point where all the wires from the coils and CDI boxes comes together, it reads  2V.
And the same reads at the wire from the push button (the one that is going to the S/Relay).
What I cant understand is why it reads 10,5V from the (+) Bat to the wires? it should read 10,5V from    (-)Bat.  I want (+) 10,5V going to the starter button switch...

JotaCorsa.....

generally relays have 4 wires
battery  DONE
starter  DONE
earth  DONE
12v key on TO STARTER BUTTON

Thanks anyway guys.. I know its basically impossible to do wires over the interweb..

Thanks Yes I am using standard regulator/ignition system....

thanks for the great book on wiring... You know what I am going to read next time, well the next few times, when I have to drop some friends off at the pool... ;)

Well, well, after just one visit to the pool and I have spot the mistake in my loom...  Will fix it tonight and let you guys know... Thanks again for this book. Very easy to read and he makes it easy to follow. Wish I had it a few days ago..

I have just fixed my problem and every thing is working fine... Even got the clutch switch in the loom...
My RGS wire diagram is going to the bin! Only need his book... :P
Thanks guys...
