Well, I had a go at the sensor with a cotton bud...  No oil in there- although it seemed to have been wet- there was some corrosion on the rotor which I polished off.

Engine oil will migrate into all the parts of a slotted  opto isolator, including the photo transistor connections and the unterminated base connection if a lead wire is attached to the photo transistor. This desenses the sensor from available emitter beam current.  Any oil on an opto has potential to alter operational characteristics. Clean oil was ok, just the contaminated oil caused issues.

Next is witness marks on the shutter,  if the shutter contacts the plastic housing of the inner slot ( read,  hard to see ), deforming the plastic over the small ( less than 1m/m square ) emitter/detector path,   then beam power is reduced or obscured at the least.  Due to high ambient operating temperature for slotted opto's on Laverda's the emitter beam power has to be kept low, very low. Which means little margin for obscuring slot gap or leakage currents ( warm/hot oil contamination ) desaturating the detector photo transistor, ie unreliable triggering.  It does not take much to produce an intermittent operation of a slotted opto in this application, on a Laverda.

The above is just background information of course,  though you need to be aware you may have one or more faults causing the same effect.

 HTH Reggie.

Just tested it again bypassing the opto pickup- ran for about five minutes, stopped for about eight and then ran again.  Anyway, will speak to Witt today to let him know the results.  It's just one of those things- I bought a fancy Samsung TV last year that crapped out straight out of the box, these things happen...

Fibre glass cleaning pens are much more effective than cotton buds at cleaning electrical stuff :

Probably not the lens on an optical sensor though... :D

Anyway, after extensive testing, tomorrow it will be winging its way back to Germany for examination.  It's not as if I need the bike, too damn busy and my bloody housekeeper is  off sick with suspected coeliac disease (it's taken a while to convince her to lay off the KFC, silly cow) grumble grumble grumble.

And someone has parked a bloody Harley in my carpark.  Have to get that out of sight, don't want people getting the wrong impression...  :-[

I feel your pain Reggie, my butler has recently gone down with gout and we've packed him off to the sanitorium. The silly fellow kept polishing off the port after we'd repaired to the drawing room for a nightcap, it was bound to catch up with him. Bloody inconvenient what? To make matters worse the bounder has got the only key to the humidor.

I thought you were married?  Oops sorry must be a civil partnership. :D

I am, and I don't want her indoors doing that work either, she has a business to run while I dick about with motorcycles.  :o

Women are capable of a lot more than we blokes give them credit for. And they're also very good at multi tasking

Ha, I wuz right- this from Uwe Witt

Yes it looks to have an internal broken ground wire, because temporarily there is a malfunction on all three input lines (2 inductive and 1 opto input)

They are sending me a new box.  No quibbles, top service, buy with confidence!   :D

Everything else is tickety-boo, looking forward to taking the old heap for a good spank sometime very soon!

That's really (sort of) funny, Reggie.

These days, Moto Witt is a one-man show!  Used to be a 15-strong workforce... how's that for recession?:o

Well, it'd be funny if it wasn't so sad.

Well even more kudos to him for checking the box and getting back to me so quickly!

No wonder he sounded harassed on the phone and I sympathize- we have got by with only one staff member this year (we usually have two, sometimes three) and it's fookin' knackering, but these are uncertain times and the important thing is having money in the bank so you can live to fight another year.

BTW if anyone out there is able to give George Osborne the smack in the mouth he so richly (ha!) deserves, I'll do their bird for them :D

No, hang on, that doesn't sound right.  When I say I'll do their bird I mean...  Oh, forget it.

Although he keeps himself busy with all sorts of CNC machining  and electronic jobs for the automotive industry as well as a bit of bike trading here and there, he's soldiering on with the production of the ignition systems.

Ain't knocking the product- it developed a fault, these things happen, mine might have been a 1 in 500 or even 1 in 1000 problem, who knows?  Whatever, he offered to replace it without hesitation and that is terrific service.
