I have seen this one before. I think one of the main challenges in it is that planet gears are carrying all of the load one by one. In usual planetary gearset all of the planet gears are carrying the load simultaneuously. Not sure how this can be overcome in applications such car gearboxes. I think that at least it will need serious optimisation for the design. Of course computer aided design is widely used today and it would be more easy to see how varying dimensioning and materials will change the situation. Also economical manufacturing will be needed.
