worthy to restore?

ok... it doesn't look very encouraging... :'(

My solution for the chromer, is to clean the exhaust in GOOD ultrasonic bath, it normally removes all carbon residues, I cleaned my 750 head and pistons and they were like new afterwards, maybe that would work.

I will ask Cox on the meantime just in case.

Finally this week I contacted Malcom Cox, his recommendation was to send him the downpipes and collector, he would restore them and recommended me to mount his Jota "silencers", he said that they improve bike performance and I am happy with this combination. I also found original pair of silencers for a 3C, they are not perfect but chrome is in good condition, so I will have the good looking pipes and the original-police ones 8)

From your experience how long should I wait for an email answer from Malcolm before sending him a reminder?? I don't want to bother him, but I also don't want that he forgets about me or that he thinks I am not interested... :-\

Regards,
Miguel

Yep, go with the welded in patch. Covering the holes with tin solder might plug up the holes you can see, but the metal is likely to be paper thin next to your repair, and will spring a leak again before long. With a welded in patch, you know the metal is a good thickness.

A lot of the beauty of a 3C is it"s originality and not having loud Jota silencers.Interestingly Marco said retaining the single pipe collector on a drummer , with original mufflers works well and in truth I find it does. Yours is a later 3C,so not so relevant, but Wolfgang was getting me new old style silencers made in Europe for my other 3C, but I fear Covid may have stopped that, I"m still waiting to hear.

Ok, that is a good idea asking Wolfang. My initial idea was to use original silencers, but mines are too bad, all restorers said they don?t do it anymore.
I found a pair with chrome in good condition but with scratches here and there, they are usuable but I like to have the bikes spotless after restoration, but surely I can and will use them. I will ask Wolfang, may be he has something.
About the Malcolm Jota?s, is not optimum but is a good looking option, and he is restoring also my downoioes and collectors as a pack.

I also had an original pair rechromed (not repaired) with Chromfix ,hard to find chromers that touch used silencers due to spoiling their tanks, good job done by them, after you get them back they tell you to sloosh out the insides with liquid ACF 50 to stop the acids working, which I did.

Great, I will contact them and ask. My idea was to clean them first with ultrasonic bath, with a good one used from engineering shop, they get spotless I would say.

initially he answered very fast, but since last thursday.. no news, I also wrote him on Facebook ::)

LJ-2, thank you! I have contacted them and they can re-chrome my exhaust, if Malcolm doesn't answer, I will send them downpipes as well. I will clean all before with good ultrasonic to have them spotless inside, and remove a few dents. So may be I will have the originals looking like new!  :P

I'll keep you posted!

Miguel,
I am in the process of restoring an MV Agusta 860cc Monza. I had one of the mufflers repaired and ready for chroming with the other three. The electroplater was right to do the work but as it turned out the cost of chroming was about 85% of getting new mufflers so  that is what I did. Taking Malcom's option is definitely the way to go. Good luck with it all.

Yes! I am trying...

But I am actually doing both ways. I will buy Malcom silencers restoring downpipes (if I manage to comunicate with him)
And at the sametime I am restoring a pair of original mufflers I found... i think could be nice to have both options depending on the occasion. Like ladies with dresses (or at least the spanish ones)

And... the guy some colleagues recommended to fix my tank, looks to work pretty fine! I like the results for the time! he is around 70 years old and has been working over 40 years bikes and cars. When I saw it I thought... this doesn't look so difficult   I guess I am wrong, but some day I will try it

I really enjoy oxy welding. And I got pretty neat at it during the 3-day welding course I did. As for TIG on alu or stainless?? Forget it! Take it to the experts.

Actually just picked up my stainless inlet stubs for my foam filters (they fit into silicone tubes that curve up and onto the ovaloid velocity stacks on the FCRs). I made the tubes from .7mm sheet rolled into tubes and seam welded then the two angled pieces were welded together. The guy who did it is a dab hand, but even he had trouble - 'burning holes then chasing them up' to quote him!

That's fantastic, Thomas. Probably would have been the perfect option for the .7mm stainless I made my muffler canisters out of. As it was it didn't matter because the seam is out of sight.
