Hi all,

As per title.

Came home, put her on the center stand and then when I did fold the stand in again, it broke in 2 pieces (weld of the connecting rod broke)

I'm neither superman nor particularly rude with things I own, so how this happend...

Thanks for your advice,
Jeroen

FWIW, yes well known the fatigue failure of centre stand. Also the elongation flogging out of the hinge plates. Worsened by use of non shouldered fasteners in the brass bushings. Lot of weight 550lbs plus on that stand.

Of the outwardly expensive centre stand at dam, when doing one of my numerous welding courses at TAFE, fabricated a very nice ( if i do say so myself ) Laverda centre stand. Even made jigs for further replica Centre stand fabrication. Took about 4 weeks to fabricate in class times. Very easy to stuff up the actual dimensions and alignment ( hence the welding assist jigs ), hard to describe how involved the fabrication process became, even with veteran weldor teachers on my shoulder. One was head weldor at Qantas Jet Base Mascot.

Rewelding is not without introduced problems, run the risk of cracking on either side of the new weld repair. Normalising helps to ameliorate the post welding repair. Also gusseting where possible. Hope that helps. j

Across the bridging radius bar? Left to Right side of the main supports. Usual failure point, can be beefed up in replacement item. Not worth re-welding that bar, replacement is better.
Do you Marty and sons take turns standing next to the bike? Or as Doug had me do, hold his 3c while he paid for petrol...snowy GP many moons ago... jon the voice commanded bike holderer upper....j

Hi Jon, yep, Doug's bike which lives here now. Doug welded it up after that snowy rally, but it broke again. End of the imlay road, Doug is desperate for a pee, rides the bike across a paddock to lean it against a tree. Classic stuff😁

Yes Marty, fun at every stop, you never notice a centre stand until it leaves you for a better place, another classic from same man.... back blocks of Bowral.....narrow lane riding along, Mr D in front...rear view mirror on handle bar becomes loose...gives it a twist ( still hooting along ) mirror hurled into adjacent paddock... how do i know...was behind him.... a moment in time... the few the many. j

FWIW, notice in the DAM part, seems to be a kink for the brace clearance of the exhaust collector, may be mistaken. That may seem like an expedient manufacture process, most stressed part of the stand that brace. Additional stress from the kink would trouble me. BTW i fabricated the "legs" from thick wall steam pipe, perfect material. The brace radius was very difficult to achieve a uniform non linear radius, to clear the collector. Wonder how many here have made a centre stand from stock steel profiles? j.
