Ok gang, I just read a similar post but here is mine.

Starter motor wont do its thing, relay is clicking.

Took it off, put it in a vice and it whirred ok.

Put the thing back on, and it didnt work. Even connected an external battery which didnt do anything. The leads tensed up and big sparks.

Connected the positive directly to the starter top pin, big sparks and nothing.

Bad earth somewhere but I cant figure out where???

I guess its time to take the thing apart? Not something Ive done before.

Cheers stefan. I just did exactly that. I took the back off and had a good look around. Stupidly (novice error) I also took the brushes off the coil and then spent a good hour trying to put them back on again. PITA.

When I put it back together it works again. So at least I am not going mad. There is definitely a problem in there somewhere.

I gave it a good spray of brake cleaner and it seems ok now.

Long term I reckon I will get a new one.

At least I can try and get the bike going again.

Left the shed door open so the mozzies have had a good feast.
Time for bed.

Cheers
Ed.

FWIW,  the long 6m/m fasteners that go end to end of the starter can carry the full load current of the starter motor. Depends on the amount of paint residue on the centre barrel to end caps, as to how much of this current is carried to the end can via steel rods.  Also the field coils are interchangeable between SJCE and Bosch starters,  some other parts are interchangeable like the centre barrel from memory. Have a half SJCE half Bosch starter on one of the Laverda's here.  HTH John.

Series 2 180 and 120 motors,  pay attention to the starter clutch 3 off cover retaining screws,  if they work loose, this is the result. Was riding when this happened.

Like your kit Stefan,  way to do it  :).

Regards John.
