Harsh Reality Pics - The Black Museum

750 side panel screws worn? Yep mine were, then the panel fell off and was run over by the following TWO cars...

Screw threads on those do wear and the thread in the lug wears as well.
The original screws are too short and don't use all the length of the thread in the lug. That + vibration = side panel falls off.

I had a leaking gasket under the needle/seat of my SF at one time decades ago, it sprayed a fine stream out the side past the head gasket and never suffered anything else as a result, still riding it. How did it manage to leave the skirt behind and took a chunk out of the bottom of the sleeve?

I asked my buddy today:
must have been there before. He never found any parts belonging to the liner.

The result of a mishap at my final m.o.t inspection last November...….having previously fixed a brake light switch issue on the bike before submitting it, I was watching from a Covid safe distance as the inspector tested the brakes, unfortunately he had the bike on the centre stand with the engine ticking over when he mistakenly kicked it into gear!...….you can imagine the rest...…happy I was not!!
Now all repaired I was very lucky with the damage which was paid for, the fairing taking the brunt of it and is now better than ever.
It could have been so much worse.

My buddy left the petrol taps open....
Hydraulic lock.
I am always afraid of this ,especially during winter storage as I store my bike with a full tank of fuel, I don't trust the fuel taps even closed, so I disconnect them from the carbs and connect a length of fuel line between the fuel taps, no worries

Holy shit. It sounds like the MOT bloke is incompetent. You don't want idiots like that messing with your bike. Why would he want to run the engine in the first place? He's not checking for tappet noise FFS.

The guy that does my bike inspections barely looks at them. He knows me well enough to be confident that my bikes are always OK. He just checks the engine and frame numbers to make sure the paperwork is right. Occasionally he'll give the brake lever a squeeze or ask me to demonstrate the lights and indicators. There's no way he'd ever start the engine or put it in gear.

I had exactly the same experience at Aye-Gee in Welling!
Fortunately, I was walking into the workshop, to ask why the **ck he was leaving an air-cooled engine ticking over, inside, for ages, as it happened.
It jumped the stand, up in the air, on a hydraulic bench.
I grabbed it, before it fell, and pulled in the clutch.
I remonstrated with him (euphemism), sharply!
He passed it and I never went back there.
I never again allowed my bike to be MOT'd, without me being present.

Now that would have been expensive!!…..a lucky escape there Hamish.

With mine, to be fair it was an honest mistake though a stupid one, the guy was obviously gutted that it had happened, as was I. Why he had the engine running I don't know but when you do a lot of modern bikes in a row then one with a right handed gear change comes in away from the norm, I guess it can catch you out big time?
So be warned if it can happen it will.

That sound of it going over though haunted me for weeks.

it is not a requirement for the engine to even be able to run for an MOT, (ask any number plate trader) unless the lighting is a direct system that requires the DC generator to be turning.
The exhaust decibel level was in question a few years ago as the hot hatch boy racers were getting away with murder and the bikers were getting harassment, "where is the kite mark" etc, thanks to MAG that got scrapped the boy racers only get persecuted individually and bikers (almost) escape the scenario, remember
it is possible that no jota or Monty ever had road legal silencing.
