Weather where you are?

Bummer, re the weather in Oz, hope everyone keeps safe.
However, I am experiencing a different type of unseasonable weather in Norway/Sweden at the moment, but it’s made a little expedition all the more enjoyable.

I'm wondering whether they may finally decide it's simply unfeasible with our altered climate to persevere with Lismore where it now stands.
I doubt the locals would react favourably to the idea of abandoning the city and all its infrastructure. I think a more likely response might be to improve levee walls and other flood mitigation measures. Might be hard to get insurance for buildings in Lismore now though.

People get attached to the place they live in. Even when shit like this happens, their first reaction is to clean up the mess and try to get it all back to how it was before the flood.

I reckon if I had a house that was in a potential flood zone, I'd look at the possibility of jacking it up and sitting it on stilts. Alternatively, build a house that floats. It's not a new or complicated idea.

Oddest thing a couple of days ago.

Under the handrail of my deck is a string of fairy lights. The solar charged battery must be on its last legs, cause during the night the lights go out.

Ok, lights are out, lightning cracks pretty close by, fairy lights flash on for about one second.......

I've seen the same, in a lightning storm.
Lightning delivers enough photons to trip a photovoltaic cell.

I get a similar thing, too, when the foxes trip my security lights, in the middle of the night.
When the floodlights time out, the Mrs.'s flashing solar led thingies in the flower beds, run for 5-10 seconds.

Be buggered, I thought I was conjuring up Edison ............... ok, back to sleep everyone.

We're in the process of downsizing - which involves moving back to Christchurch. Insurance companies really do not want to insure ChCh properties since the earthquakes. Add in that we've had several flood events and the Eastern - low lying - side of town is almost uninsurable.
We managed by going through a broker we'd dealt with previously. But it ain't cheap. About 50% dearer for a small eastern property compared to our current large rural place.

Problem is they jack up on stilts, then build that area in and take up residence in there and then it floods and ...............

Cleaned up after 2011 in the flooded town I lived near. Heart breaking ........... it was a brain fuck for me.
I dunno how (Legs) Terry and his mates have dealt with such disasters for so long.

Greg, due to the above, my insurance went up + 20% almost overnight, even though my house was 8klm away from any floodwater and high on a hill. But because we shared the same postcode I had to pay extra

Was not a good idea for this bloke. Lucky he had a life jacket and was rescued.
Blimey, that's scary. I guess if you have a floating house, you'd want it tethered to some pretty solid piles - similar to a floating boat marina. But even floating marinas can be washed away in a flood. I reckon the only protection you can rely on for extreme weather conditions like that is to build your house on top of a hill.

I used lived on my boat in the Brisbane river for about a year in 1989-90. I was parked on the pile moorings next to the botanical gardens (Kangaroo point?) along with a heap of other people living aboard their boats. I dunno whether those moorings are still there, but it was scary even in a mild flood because of all the shit that would wash down the river and potentially clobber your boat.

I don't know what to make of Sydney's predicted big wet, I didn't get much from the latest forecast 50 to 150mm but some did. The big hits happened 60ks from the coast with some reporting an Insane 200mm in a day. It luckily was a lot more spartic than the all-encompassing deludes we expected. Hopefully, it's all beyond us now fingers crossed for more usual conditions to returning.

Temporary reprieve, Vince. This is a pattern that is going to become WAY more common than once in 100 years - along with bushfires. Scary - but at least we know there are people like Putin and his cronies who hold all the rubles focusing on the problem and doing whatever they can to mitigate the effects of a warming climate. Imperialist ambitions in a time of crisis - so clever.

That ex Cyclone from Western Oz is now feeding another East Coast Low, it's getting a little monotonous, you get Cabin Fever from the constant rain. Better than those floating away with it
